Tacoma on ice... I'll take the car instead.

Hate to say it, but after a trip w/ the 4wd truck then our Mazda 3s Fwd car this morning on heavy sleet and freezing rain road surface, car wins.

Both have full snow/ice tires, which helps both alot, but the ABS is so freakin sensitive in the Taco that braking distance which is usually 20% more than the car felt like double that today.

Of course couldnt make all the way up my 10% grade driveway with the car, and when the snow returns the car eats the truck's snowdust.

 

Now I am wondering if my ABS has issues, but I don't seem to have that issue with my 05. If I push hard on the breaks, then I can feel/hear it.

The last 2 ice storms we had here, I did need 4 wheel drive, but the only thing I had issues with was the sloppy/light rear end. This was the first winter with the lift, so took awhile to get use to. But slowing down for me (since I do drive fast) has helped the most.

 

Do you have weight on the back of the truck?

 

well................no I don't, but hear me out....it has been almost a month since I had it out, no mistaken, I drove it once on a nice day.

But I am planning on getting weight in the back, I will be adding a full size spare, and a bed tire carrier, plus a couple black burlap tubes full of sand.

 

Abs is very sensitive, I agree. Try pumping the brakes for faster stopping

That confuses the ABS. Not advised. Best thing to do is take your foot off the brake and attempt another threshold braking. The point where the wheels are at maximum braking but not locking up and engaging ABS.

Indiana here, had 3 ice storms so far, nothing much. Here in the AM gone by noon.
It has been the most un-eventful winter in years. If it wasn't below freezing at night you would think it's spring.

If the ABS brakes seem sensitive, you should have the dealer look at them.

I've never felt my ABS come on. The only way I know they exist on my truck, is if I slam on the brakes with all my weight behind it.

Either that - or you're using your brakes too hard for the conditions.

In snow/ice - LOTS of distance (slow down EARLY) and just barely use the brakes. If you can downshift and use engine braking, that's even better.

 

Yea, I've seen that, but thats only for those w/ the Off-road which has the locker, which defeats ABS.

I complain about the ABS, but really today is some of the worse ice I've driven on w/ the truck in 5 winters, so just an obs from today. Normal driving on snow (w/ winter tires) it takes a hammering on the brakes to get it to cycle the ABS.

 

While I was impressed overall with how my truck has handled in the snow, I do agree that the ABS is too sensitive. I also found that the Vehicle Stability Control is WAY too sensitive on snow/ice. It was often kicking in at low speeds with the slightest hint of a tire slipping... turning into/out of parking lots, or even pulling into my parents driveway at Christmas.

Yea, used to run picks, new they were sick, but after a couple seasons pounding pavement they rounded and didnt penetrate as well. Plus and minuses with both types. Glad days this bad are rare. Gotta say the studless Blizzaks even on season 5 are still pretty good and its amazing that even on this I could still accelerate, turn, and eventually brake... albeit slowly.

 

Forget the Blizzaks, bring a pair of skates

Hey, don't know how long its been since then, I know you said Blizzaks for 5 years, but you might find that the studs are a little better now. Just a thought.

Kinda wonder about the ones you had, cause even the studded ones I got my wife 9 years ago were still cutting ice well after 5 years.

What do you guys mean the ABS is too sensitive If the wheels start to skid while braking the ABS kicks on, if they're not skidding the ABS doesn't kick on.
