Camera help...

Installing an Boyo camera to my Kenwood hu.

This is the camera:

Instructions are worthless. NO mention of how it is to be wired. Seems simple enough. Yellow RCA connector to HU video in, Blk to ground, red to 12v.

As I read it these are generally wired to the reverse lights so that the camera comes on when the truck is in reverse.

Rather than run all the way to the back of the truck I think I should be able to pick that wire up in the cab here:

Unfortunately this thread appears to indicate that the color of that wire changes based on the year of your truck. I have an 06. I'm hoping 08 and earlier are red/white. Can anyone confirm that?

Yup you are on the right track That's the wire you want to hook to for your reverse lights. 2006 should be red/white. just like you have written and you will be fine.

Trying to get everything ready, and realized I have another question.

The diagram in the manual shows a separate input for a camera (left side - middle part of diagram.)



Also part of that input are wires labelled relay 1 and 2.

I assume these wires are for a Kenwood camera system or something - and I don't need to worry about them at all.

Happy to keep you posted. Hope to do the install next weekend. I'm on call for work so it may be two weeks from now. Trying to anticipate all the pitfalls and get all my ducks in a row so it goes smoothly when the day comes. I'm not experienced with this stuff, but PM me if there's anything I can answer.

 

No you don't need to worry about the relay wires. those are for additional add ons that you will not need with what your trying to do. There is actually two built in relays in the HU itself used to control whatever you want lights, camera, amp, etc. The cam + and - can be used to power your camera and or an additional camera, say a front view or side. But wiring it the way you described before will work fine and is IMO the easiest way to do it.

 

I just installed the same camera a few weeks ago with a JVC KW-NT50HDT HU. I am a novice installer as well. I researched the heck out of it and in the end it was very easy to install (took a while running the cable with big hands). Yes the Red/White is correct and very easy to spot and tap into. I grounded it to the chassis right next the Red/White wire. Also at that spot i added an extension to the video wire with a male-female connector and cable and brought that up to the HU. I have a '06 DC. My HU's wiring is bit different. The camera works great and is barely noticeable on the truck. It doesn't scream, "Hey I am a camera, steal me!" I am happy with it. If you need any help, ping me.

 

Looks like that head unit gives you power out for a camera, I would check that with a meter and see if it 6 or 12v and use it, may already be switched inside the unit.

I have a question about including a switch to use the camera anytime. I know this has been described with the OEM camera. Not sure I've seen it fully described like this.

You are supposed to hook the camera up to the Reverse lights so that it comes on when you shift into reverse. I want that to happen, but I also I want to be able to turn it on whenever I want. From what I've read I can think of two ways to make that happen. I've included diagrams but please pardon my inaccurate symbols.

The first uses a DTSP switch so that the switch determines whether the camera is off, or connected to the reverse light circuit, or connected to the always on circuit.

The second uses a regular STSP switch. The problem is that when you press the switch your reverse lights will come on (and potentially the electronics in the truck will think I'm supposed to be in reverse). I'm told a diode (

$5 1N4001 Standard Recovery Rectifier Diode, General Purpose, Single, 1.0 A, 50V (Pack of 20)

1N4001?) would prevent power from reaching the reverse light circuit. This seems a little more complicated - but the switch I have that is this type is cooler.

Would appreciate feedback on which method would be best - or if neither method is correct.

I am indeed trying to recreate what he did. This was the post I was referring to. My wiring is different b/c I don't have the OEM setup. Is what I've drawn equivalent?
