Just picked up a new Taco Pre-Runner Double cab and I love it (and I am an old fart at 44 :)) but the stereo sucks, lol....

My question is, with the stereo integrated into the whole center dash structure, what are my options??

    - Can the head unit be changed without major mods?
    - Is it worth just changing out the speakers and does that make a big difference?

I guess I am just looking for options and I would appreciate any feednack!

Yes, it can be changed out with major modification. You will need to purchase an aftermarket wiring adapter ($10) and a trim piece that replaces the stock plastic for one that fits the aftermarket stereo ($35).

The speakers do suck, but you are better off changing the source first. It will open up more options as far as playback material (CDs, DVDs, mp3 players, satellite radio, HD radio, etc) as well as adding subwoofers or amplifying your aftermarket door speakers (which is preferable but not required).

This is what my stereo looks like now: [IMG]

There are a couple of HU install threads that walk you through the process. If you are familiar with how to use a screwdriver and a pair of snips, then the process shouldn't take more than 2 hours. If you order your stereo from www.crutchfield.com they will provide you with all the wiring adapters and dash install kit (the replacement trim pieces) and give pretty decent instructions on the process. You will also have access to their customer support, which is pretty good in my experiece.

Welcome CR! And don't be calling yourself an "ole fart" at 44 when I am 43! Here is a pic of the Pioneer Avic F700Bt that I just had put in my rig. Loving it so far. Good luck! It's not the best pic, but I put the black kit in, instead of the grey and I like the contrast.

One last item, I bought my unit from Crutchfield and the dash kit came with the purchase. I had the option to buy the grey or the black. FYI

Welcome "old fart" :D (I'm older than you so I can say that :p) There is a lot of great info in the stickies at the top of the page and the FAQ thread should help you about the speakers. Have fun! :)

So, any decision on if you are going to go the totally awesome route of installing a new H/U?

Well, I would say I definitely am going to do something in the next month or so. Probably replace all stock speakers and add a head unit. Only thing that worries me with the aftermarket unit is the possibility of theft as my truck is at the train station during the day....
