Bestop Supertop

i can get a gently used Supertop with windows for $300 from a guy about an hour away. right now i have a tonneau cover that i like, its a soft trifold. its ok but limits the capacity of my already short 5' bed. i would likely keep that and use it sometimes but am considering the supertop. i know they go for $500-600 new and he says this one is mint but his wife doesnt like it.

i have a kid on the way so the extra dry storage would be nice when we travel

any opinions on this product would be appreciated.

is it noisy on the highway?

is it as rainproof as my tonneau?

is it easy to install? and to fold down when i need the bed to be open?

maybe some pics of yours open? closed?

its all put together now so i think i just have to clamp it to the rails.

I ordered one tuesday and will be here the 31st and ill install the next day so I'll be able to give you some feedback then but as of right now I'm not a lot of help. I payed 490 for mine brand new. But from what I've heard the do a great job of keeping out the water if installed properly.

I've had tonneaus on full size trucks and mid size trucks in the past. This is my first Taco and my first Bestop. So far I have few complaints. It seems to be as water tight as any cover I've had, I can fold it down and up myself but need a helper to take the entire thing off myself. The rear window of mine is always covered in dust/rain/mud because I live on a dirt road but that'd be true with any cap/topper. I highly recommend them everyone looks at it and comments "never seen a top like that! where did you get it" and I get to reply "They don't make em for Chevys "

If it's as advertised get it. It's not noisy at all and works perfectly.

Get it.

 

I've had one for about 6 months now and still love the thing. Here is a short break down.

Pro
1) Collapses in minutes in warm weather.
2) Reasonably waterproof, no major leaks yet.
3) Versitility (cannot be overstated!)
4) Quiet at highway speeds
5) Light weight.

Con
1) Windows are heavily tinted! Visibility is limited at night.
2) Difficult if not impossible to manipulate in cold weather.
3) Looks (subjective)
4) Potential lack of security

I was sold on it's versatility and price. Worthwhile investment if you are honest about your usage and understand it's limitations.

 

If you fold it down, you will not be folding it back up with the windows in in weather colder than 70degrees. That's for sure. Forgot to mention the window tint, Cpt Fun is right, even on an overcast day even, you can't see people behind you unless they're running their DTRL. If you're looking for dry stroage for items and areas where you aren't concerned about theft and you want it for cheap this is it.

 

so far i like mine. mine has some excess material in the rear window section creating this weird bulge. other than that so far so good.

i tried installing mine in march before....never worked. the material needs the warmer weather to stretch.

i'm sure he'll chime in here, but a member on here actually experienced some nasty cross winds and it ripped it right off the truck while he was driving.

 

i live in the northeast so the winter could duck for me, i worry about folding it down to load my ATV and not being able to open it back up, i guess i could use the tonneau in the winter? the weather is my main concern, i can heat my garage but getting it to 70 when its 20 outside isnt hapeneing

 

I like mine so far, had it for a few months. The side windows are a pain in the ass to get put on properly. they have this shitty "J hook" that you have to slide in from one side. They should have just made the top of the windows have a zipper like the sides.

We ALWAYS have wind here in north texas, bording Oklahomo. I drive 70 on highway everyday and with 30+ mph winds and I have not had any problems with it trying to blow away.

It is pretty rain proof so far. the only leaks I get are around the tailgate but you will get that with any topper.

 

If you have the space you could just unbolt the whole structure from the bed in winter. Granted, that sort of defeats the purpose of a collapsable topper. I would do that myself but don't have that option in my current living situation.

 

i could remove it all together and keep it in the basement of my house, then it would prob be warm enough to install in the garage if i wanted it back on.

does it really not fold back up when its cold?

 

I have not had a chance to try it out when it was cold. I know the side windows can be a pain though even in cool temperatures though. I just leave the thing on and up now.

 

Define cold.

Serious winter months... No chance. The cloth, clips and windows are too brittle and you could break something.

I don't believe the 70 degree limit is hard and fast but a factory recommendation. I've put mine up early spring on a day where it was mid 40's but left the topper out in the sun or a few hours to warm up. It wasnt easy but it's possible with patience.

 

i've had my softop since last summer and am satisfied with it...

i don't notice any noise from it on the highway..some extra drag caused by it at higher speeds (mpgs went up a bit when i put it down recently)

rainproof as a tonneau, i doubt it...a few spots in some seams i have noticed some dripping, but i heard you can add some water proofer to help

easy to install? yes and no..hardest part is getting the canvas to stretch out the first time...easy to put down? yes, very easy..

so you need to remove the windows the fold it down?

do you think the cover itself can be opened when its cold? and just leave the windows out or heat them inside the house?

i would be folding it down and back up maybe 10 times all winter

 

I've tried to put mine back up when it was in the 50's and I about broke my fingers trying to zip the sides up. The back isn't a problem in the cold weather but the sides are. What I did was take it inside the house for a few hours and let em warm up and stretch out and then take em outside one at a time for the install. It happened, but wasn't easy.

 

Do you guys leave anything in the bed with these on? How are they with theft?

 

As a general rule I don't leave anything in the truck I'm not willing to part with. The topper is cloth and could be cut if a theif wanted to. On the other hand a thief could just pick up a rock and smash the glass of a hard top. I have left stuff in the bed for short periods of time but nothing overnight.

 

Love mine! Got mine a couple months ago and it is holding up perfectly. Strong, lightweight, easy to fold down. I get asked questions about it every day it seems like. Noise, even at high speeds, is negligible... even in high winds (60 mph+) it handles like a champ. I picked mine up off of eTrailer.com for about $460 with free shipping (after coupon code).
