Hi...I'm new to this site. Got referred here from another, non-Toyota forum.
I own a 1981 Toyota Std 1/2 ton with one of the earliest 22R engines...early enough that it should never have to suffer from the timing chain problems of later versions since this one has the double row.

I don't own a Tacoma...what I own pre-dates them and it now has some serious problems. I'll be posting them in the Toyota Truck & SUV part of the forum.

I glanced over your other posted shit a little , did you check for a pilot bushing not being in place at the back of the crankshaft (i.e; input shaft on trans) you said you were a half inch off or something to that effect ??

Also , I've mated several 5 speeds from 22R's to 20R's with no install isues at all, its probably a truck thing though with short shaft/long shaft differences.... just fishin' here...:notsure:

I haven't gotten as far as doing the install...being 1/2ish short is just a preliminary measurement by using a measuring tape to check totally tranny length.

Please take note of the differences I listed: the 5speed has differently placed starter bell (top left instead of top right). To the best of your knowledge would this be a problem? All I have to go by for identification of this transmission is what the seller was able to tell me. That it came from behind an 84-85 w/ a 22R. I'm at a loss here...and at this point my existing starter won't even fit...and the clutch slave is also on the opposite side (drivers instead of passengers).

Will try to get some pics up to aid in getting help.

    Oooookay....good news and bad news.

Good news: I don't have to worry about the starter/clutch slave problem anymore.

Bad news: Bolt pattern isn't quite...right. Got my old one off and finally had the 2 side by side...just the top 2 bolt holes are 1/8th an inch off. This alone is enough to shoot THIS swap down. Took the tranny back...fortunately the guy was amiable enough so I got the 50$ back. He was just as puzzled as me. Actually turns out he got it from a guy who got it from a guy.

Well...looks like I'm going to follow up on that available 4-speed (which I'm dead certain is from a 22R Toyota) and if it turns out that one is a perfect match (I'll either have a bolt pattern made up or have the old one on hand to match directly), I'll then get it for 80$ and install it. Then just stay in the market for a 5-speed but w/o the urgency of this one.
