What Fuel Octane are you using ?

I have a 2011 TRD Sport V6. What octane are you running and do you notice any change in performance or MPG with Octane change ? Just wondering.

 

Regular 87. Anything higher just isn't necessary.

My V6 hesitates with 87 so I run 89.

 

I ran 89 a few fill ups ago and I got substantially better mileage with that tank and the next few after it, and I'm sure I wasn't driving any differently.

 

I run 91 and have read 4000 threads on octane ratings here already

 

87, I tried others but didn't notice any difference so I stick with 87 and save my money for all the great mods I find on this site...

 

I also have 2011 TRD Sport V6 and I run chevron 91. I ran chevron 87 a few time when i first got it and I also notice some hesitates and a little knock once in a while. Also notice that my engine sound/feel better when in park or idle at a stop light when I used 91.

I read thru a LOT of thread here about gas.

Anything higher than 87 is just a waste of money unless you have a high-performance engine.

 

I started out using 93 for the first 1000 miles and have been running 87 since. I have not noticed any major change in how the truck runs. In other vehicles I have had I did notice smoother running on higher octane, but so far on the Tacoma I have not seen this. I will tell you with careful driving I have been getting close to my rated highway mileage in mixed driving. I have the v6 manual trans, and it is only rated 14/18. Last to tanks I have gotten 17.5 and 17.8 by keeping my shift points at or below 2K and limiting hwy speeds to 65 as often as possible. I have also been able to get 14.3 mpg on a tank by driving faster hwy speeds and shifting for best enjoyment factor. The truck is still actually pretty drivable keeping revs below 2k. My best mpg so far with this truck has been on 87 octane, but I have not tried the same driving style on 93 yet. Usually it will take about 100 miles for the computer to update all its trims and mapping when switching octane. So if you really want to see if there is a change in your truck you need to fill up at least 3 times and then drive 100 miles before you can really say or not if 87 or 93 improves things for you.

 

I run 87. Running anything higher is a waste of money. The only time higher octane is necessary is with high compression and forced induction engines.

 

It's borderline but Toyota engineered the truck to run on 87. If they wanted you to run over 87 it would tell you to run premium fuel only.

That like computer software saying "require 512MB or higher" to run. Just b/c it say 512 mb doesn't mean it is the "recommended". Just becasue a computer company got their software to run on a computer with just 512mb of memory don't mean u should just buy a computer with just 512mb of memory. To me it is telling you that 87 is the recommended LOWEST u "should run" on. Just because they tested and got the engine to work with 87 doesn't mean it works "BEST" with 87.

OP, if you read all them threads you will see that its doesn't NOT improve MPG by much, but from my own experiences it does make a different in engine sound and knock.

 

I actually notice a significant increase in mileage with 91 octane. Like 40+ extra miles per tank.
