secondary air filter

Im about to do it. and i know that there is a mod & tutorial on it but thats for the 2.4L. any tips on the secondary filter for the V6 4.0L?

edit - the mod is better for 2.7 but is same procedure for 4.0. The filter is in the lid of the air box. Just less noticeable results. Check out the how-to in the list, it has more specifics about the benefits for 4s vs 6s.

 

Its real easy. take off your intake, pull off the airfilter. The pre-filter is held in by 6 or 8 plastic rivets. I used a sharp wood chisel to cut off the heads. make sure you pick up or vac up the plastic that land in the tube. the pre-filter comes right off. I kept mine in case i decide to put it back or sell it.

So let me get this straight. The secondary air filter is for emisions? Not really for filtering intake air? For the guys that did it to a 4L V6, did you notice that big o diff? Is it worth doing?

 

I didn't notice any difference.

 

Its been dyno tested by Gadget @ URD and you gain nothing by removing the secondary filter. I did however remove mine on my now traded in X-Runner but I have left it in on my current 08 DC 4x4.

 

Yes, according to Gadget, you gain nothing. I have not, however, seen a dyno other than Gadgets.

I will say that I saw a significant difference off the line. No, it isn't HP, I guess throttle response? It definitely is not as sluggish afterwards as it once was.

 

I think it would make a bigger difference if you had a CAI partnering with it

 

i used a flat blade screwdriver and just grabbed at it for a bit. Broke right off. Ive noticed absolutely no difference, but it is quite thick.. so it missing im SURE lets the engine breathe a better.. and you can add it to your Vehicle Information, "Modification" section.. haha

 

I used a dremel tool and drill bit.

But this method has its disadvantages. It created a lot of fine shavings.

I don't know for sure, but I think that I vacuumed all of them out then wiped down the interior.

It seems more responsive. But especially more since putting on the K&N intake, muffler, and removing the secondary I notice a big difference, according to the butt dyno.

 

Trade with someone who has 4 cyl & hasn't done it yet...........

I thought my truck idled smoother, and going up hills with the cruise control on it doesn't downshift as much, but other than that nothing. I could just be imagining it.

The reasons car companies do things are generally not geared towards the consumer's benefit more often than not-mileagewise, performance wise or longevitywise. Not always the gospel end all answer just because they do something. They do things to sell cars & make most money possible off you & me. In this case what, to keep some smell from coming from the throttle body? Haven't smelled anything different. They don't trust the primary filter to do it's job? Then spend a little profit & put a better one in it to begin with.

 

I noticed some better throttle response, i used a pair of wire cutters/dikes to cut the head off and then just cleaned it out real good.

 

I haven't seen a real difference except in maybe a bit better throttle response. I am still going through my first tank of gas with the filter out. Not expecting a change there.
