Hello, I'm Chaser, and i'm set on getting a tacoma 4x4 V6 access cab. I want a black one, and I was aiming for the TRD package, but it seems to be pretty hard to find for that color. I did find one with the SR5 package, so here's my question:

would the SR5 package be enough if i want to do some beginner-level off-roading? and is it cheaper or more expensive to add the TRD-equivalent parts to the truck later?

thank you, and i can't wait to be a legitimate forum-member with a truck :)

    Welcome to TW!

you could always get the sr5 and just add on a better lift than the trd package.

Reason being for the 4x4 advice is you said beginner offroading which leads to man i wish i had 4x4 on the harder trail runs i sometimes think that but still happy with my truck its done very well offroading.

Yeah - we will defint have our own opnions. I got the base model 4X4 (cheaper & I like the black fenders, grill, bumper) & did my own upgrades. The truck cost 23,500 & I've spent a couple grand on upgrades. And I never got the deal I wanted in Texas, ended up going to Colorado
http://www.gotoyotaarapahoe.com/ Go Toyota - get internet quotes & comparision shop. Don't take the first deal. Found some decent deals in Dallas, but they had hail damage?!? Good luck -

I got mine for 30bucks over invoice and a 1000 rebate. Then you have to add tax, title, license, 7 year 100000 mile warranty,GAP, and I got a alarm too. It ended up being a lot of money when it all done but I am planning on keeping this one till its dead.

    Chaser,
Don't waste your money on a extended warranty. I have 105,000 miles on my 05 without a single problem.:D
That was the reason I bought a Toyota. Quality! If I bought a Ford or Chevy, then get the extra warranty.

4x4 with any package or without any package will be fine for basic offroading. I have the same truck as Stevigee, 4x4 DC no trd or sr5 packages. The biggest difference in a TRD OR and a non-trd is the locker, for beginner-level you shouldn't need it anyway. The 09's have some different options standard than the previous years, so check those out if you are buying an 09.
The shocks are also different on TRD and non TRD trucks, but if you get an 05-08 under 36k miles you can get the TSB (search for info) done and it will give you 4 bilsteins for free, basically giving you the TRD suspension.
Check out Toyota.com for the specifics on the SR5 and TRD packages, basically SR5 mostly adds interior accessories and different color options on the exterior. Search for some other treads that compare/explain the SR5 vs TRD options, happy reading. Welcome to the site.

yeah I like the peace of mind knowing if anything breaks, its on them. Really I know it will run forever but its cheaper to buy a warranty and not need it than to need a warranty and not have one.

Or he could bank the money he would spend on an ext warranty. If something happens you have the money. If nothing happens you have the money.

I didn't get GAP coverage, I owed less than my truck is worth in less than a year.
I bought the extended warranty, but I didn't pay the asking price, you can get them down to dealer cost on that also.
