Can't figure this hick-up out.

Running down the road with my foot on the Go Pedal my truck decides to take a break for a split second- like your lifting off of the Go Pedal. Seems to be showing up more here in the last couple of weeks. I commute 60 miles one way to work and this problem may happen 2 times- may happen 10 times. I get no check engine light- I get no codes on the scanner. Anybody got any ideas?

 

Mine does it too from time to time. Usually not first thing in morning but when i go home and it only does it at first like it is a blocked cat and a few seconds later it takes off and runs and shifts fine. I think it has something to do with the quality of gas because it will not do it for several weeks and then after i fill up it may start again. I need to leave it my mechanic and he can run it down the road and check it.

 

throttle funny? no error code? TPS ! It is the thing the computer expects to change and can't monitor correctly. Of course it could be something odd, but that would be my first guess.

Do this:

with truck off, pump gas pedal from 0 to 100% (full out, to full in) one hundred times.

It's free, and it just might work. My TPS was acting crazy, i did this and it's been a couple of months since the problem last appeared. gdlk!

*edit* the reason this works is that the type of sensor the TPS is has a sort of builit in cleaning mechanism, the 'known' cleaning method for this type of sensor in the electronics field is 100 cycles from stop to stop.

 

Nothing is more interesting than driving a truck with a dying TPS. I just replaced mine today. Very easy to do and not that expensive. Of course its best to diagnose before throwing money around. Do you have an ohm meter?

96Taco - If i recall correctly, the TPS on every 1st gen besides 2003/2004's is cheap and easy... however, the TBW system on the newer models is stupidly expensive. pretty sure when i was looking every place i looked had me replacing the entire throttle body and it wasn't cheap. dumb. So i did the 100 pumps thing and have been fine ever since!

I was so pissed when i found i couldn't just throw the cheap TPS replacement on it like all you other guys!

I have the same thing going on + a code telling its running to lean P0171 called toyota they said it may be 02 sensor on bank one so I bought the one they said still have to put it on.... but went and cleaned everthing out and then had a few other ones come out but they clear only one remaining it this P0171 so I think I'll pop it in tomorrow... but I still like to know about this 1oo pump thing... now back in the day this would flud the car .... i was always told it was a no..no.. so I have to ask is this ok to do... I have an 02 pre runner trd 3.4l.... if that helps any.....
PLEASE SOMEONE LET ME KNOW IF THIS CAN BE DONE ON ME TRUCK BEFORE i PUT THESE SENSORS ON.....

 

The original poster says he doesn't have any codes pending or thrown - so your issue may be different.

To my knowledge the 2002 is not a 'throttle by wire' system so this will not work. My understanding (and limited experience) is it works on 2003/2004's due to the different style of TPS/TB

It may flood if it was an old carburated engine, but our newer vehicles are fine. Just do it with the key off/out of the ignition.

Try it - it's a possible free fix!

Just let us know. For what it's worth, i did this and i only had 1 slight stumble in the next 10 miles but since then it's been fine! (i was having bad TPS problems every 15-30 miles prior)

Thanks DoubleCabmn.. I never knew about the newer 2003/4 TPS system. I do not have the luxuary of owning such a nice new truck

x2, I just started getting a mis fire, finally got it to throw a code took it to my buddy's shop put it on code reader , came back as "Intermittant mis fire between cyl.1 & 2" Checking plugs & wires now...

 

I have an 04 SR5 V6 no code thrown but would feel a bad throttle lag 2 or three times a day on a 80 mile drive. checked the TPS using an ohm meter as per the service manual. It checked fine. I was sure it was the TPS, but as stated above the TPS replacement on an 04 is a 700 dollar fix with a new throttle body. I sprayed 1/2 of a bottle of sea foam down the throttle body while it was running and ran a bottle of sea foam in the gas tank twice. have not seen the problem for over two weeks. I think the 100 time push on the gas pedal is a good idea it will clean the potenometer in the TPS and I dont see what it could hurt to try. I posted my problem description on Tech Chat under title " Bad Throttle Lag" Good idea on the TPS pumping the pedal 100 times.

Funny thing about TPS which I still don't understand. My old one was throwing a code (p0710 by memory?), so I replaced it with another one from the wreckers just to trouble shoot. Code went away. Both TPS's ohm tested perfectly fine.

The TPS that doesn't throw the code seems to rev surge when I apply the clutch. The TPS which throws the code drives perfect. Not smart enough to figure this all out yet

 

I have a 2nd gen taco and I posted this thread and it almost sounds like the same problem. I changed spark plugs 2 montha ago and it's been running like a champ............until Monday!!!!

Heres my post:

The other day I took my AFE filter out of the CAI box. It's an oiled filter and I need to clean it (bad) and re-oil it. Anyways, I took it out and measured it (I ordered a Pro Dry S) and then put it back in and put the lid on the box. The next morning I hit the freeway and drove 12 miles and came to a stop light. As I took off in 1st all was good, when i put in the clutch it went sput sput, then I got it in 2nd and pushed the gas it sputtered a bit, then pushed in clutch and sput sput again then sputtered as i hit the gas. Then after that it ran like a fuckin champ!

1: truck has never done this
2: it happened morning after messing with air filter

so............did i break some dust loose and it's sucking that shit in?

Got the Pro Dry S coming Friday....hope that solves it. Then I will take this oiled AFE filter and clean it and reoil it and save for a backup.

My hat is off to ya DblCabMN! I did the 100 pumps and so far I have had no hickups in the last 300 miles. I'll keep ya'll posted as to how it goes.

I scoured the forums and saw this quick fix and it totally worked!!!
