    Thanks!

Nope no welding. It's all just nuts and bolts with locking washers. It really turned out way stronger than I was anticipating. OP if you have any questions about making it PM me

You have the DC...you have a roof rack? If so, what's the weight limit?

Harbor Freight sells a...thing...that goes into the hitch and has an extendable pole with a crossbar on top. You could put the canoe over the roof rack and strap it to the harbor freight...thing. I'm having trouble finding it on their site right now (no idea what keywords to search for).

I got no roof rack currently, but I saw some of those "thingies" and am thinking it might be the best route. But I am not sure.
I also saw the yakima outdoorsman 300 set up for under 200. It seems like a good deal...

ok, I am still having trouble finding something that works.
What truck racks (like th yakima 300) would fit my taco without any modification? and are around or under 300 bucks. Thanks

I'm in the same boat (sorry, couldn't resist). Check this thread.

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/sp...164033-official-kayaking-canoeing-thread.html

It's mostly about kayaking, but I had a brief back and forth about rack options for my 17-foot beast. I've settled on installing the OEM rack with the retractable cross-bars (which looks like the most elegant option for roof racks--at least if you've got a 2nd gen 2xcab) and adding the Harbor Frieght support that attaches to the hitch mount to support the rear. Just ordered the rack it from TRDParts4u.com for $250 w/shipping and I'm about to go pick up the rear support. So total cost will be just over $300. The nice thing about the Harbor Freight support is that you can flip it around and use it like a bed extender of sorts to support things like plywood sheets that would stick way out the back.

I thought about going the with the ladder rack style shown above that attaches to the bed rail system (there's another version that runs about $400 from worktrucksusa.com) but ultimately decided against it.

My next 4wd will get a custom built tube rack out over the cab for canoes(or lumber). Can't wait.

the xsporter looks awesome. I wish I could afford one new at this point. I'll keep my eyes open on CL for a 150 dollar one.

So had a lucky break and got to splurge. Thule makes a hell of a rack.

I've pondered the versatility of one of those every time I've seen one. Doesn't it need holes in top of the bed sides for those tho? Might not work for a Tacoma if so.

Returning my Thule Rack, very disappointed in the quality of the mounting sytem, no way am I going to put $8k worth of gear on this. Just got my 2011 and need a rack system and have used Thule on my Volvo and Mercedes. I am disapointed in the foot kit for Tacoma, big gap and not a flush mount, Also requires you mod the bed liner to get the tubs to drop all the way.

Contacted the service dept of the company I bought from and they admitted that this was an issue but that once the top bars are in place they seem to work fine...so far... not good enough for me.

When you tighten the bracket it pulls the mount inward big time, pusing it back stresses the track IMHO. Im going to look further int the DIY method shown above.

Hated my first post here is a negative but felt people need to see this. Thule needs to come up with a better adapter for Tacoma.
