I mean you guys DO realize that you are in about 3 or 4 feet of water with the breather coming out of the gas cover... pretty sure you've got waaaaay bigger problems than the location of breather....:laugh::laugh:

But it does look good, just more work than neccessary is all, eh, whatever floats yer boat I guess...;)

Do YOU realize that the gas cap area is just a convenient location that's higher than stock and relatively well protected from splashes and rain?

Regardless of if anyone plans on going through water that deep it's better than leaving it on the pumpkin.

And in case you were unaware, stock Tacomas (offroad model height anyway) can ford 27" of water from the factory per Toyota. So think about this for a minute: the manufacturer says you can go through water over the top of the diffs, but didn't relocate the breather for the rear one. This is just fixing that oversight.

And btw, if you haven't figured this out yet, the factory front breathers are in the engine bay at the same height as the filler cap.

    But do continue mocking this....

Don't get sensitive on me , I said I DO LIKE the MOD, & I'm not mocking it, just sayin' we aren't trying to re invent the wheel, but shit dude some of these write ups got guys buying extra breathers, little nipple connectors & like I said its just overkill. Maybe YOU need to think a bit, if I'm in well over 2ft -3ft of water , last thing I'm thinking about is how much residual moisture getting into my diff thru a ONE WAY breather valve (in case you haven't figured it out a diff breather breathes OUT not in, relieving pressure created inside the diff :rolleyes::rolleyes:)

Now you guys that have to deal with more than normal water conditions or just basically leave your truck in the water may want to go to extremes, but for the other 90% of us, its just not neccessary, I said before to each his own, guess you missed that, whatever, run it all the way up past your snorkel . Whatever floats your boat (or truck in your case) You need a hug now ???;)

We (well most of us) ARE using the same model (2 way) breather that is on the front differential when we do the rear diff. mod.

The one-way breather does indeed keep water out, if it is underwater (18" or more deep)...

It is a 2 way breather (like Toyota puts on the end of the tube from the front differential) that BREAKS the VACUUM created when a hot rear differential goes into a cooler water crossing and prevents water from sucking in past the axle seals.

My truck was only 6 months old when I did a deep crossing (3ft. on one side) and upon inspection after the trip, my rear diff. was indeed contaminated and required a change of oil.

Not really seeing how getting it up out of any water the truck can really go thru in a clean place with something that lets it breath both ways so there is no pressure build up at all thereby keeping fluid and seals safer with a fitting a breather and a piece of hose is so much overkill as it is effective. Maybe some folks don't see it being that high as a challenge to drive thru somethin that deep just because it is that high. I doubt anyone with a snorkel intends or believes that their truck will go thru anything that deep either. That's got to be 6 ft of water. It's hardly overkill at 15.00 or less of materials either....but yes, to each their own.

Sensitive? How about trying to inform someone who obviously has no clue what this is for and posting about it, essentially, being pointless.

If you don't leave asphalt and never run the chance of going through water up to the bottom of your diff or axle ends (that's less that 3 feet genius), then you never need to do this. Oh wait, maybe that's why it's overkill for you. You never drive through water.

And yes, you're right. It's a 1-way valve that clamps shut if the diff cools quickly, sucking the valve shut. What exactly do you think happens to that vacuum after that? The oil seals around the diff seam and axle ends were designed to keep oil in, not water out. Water gets sucked in through those seals NOT THE DIFF BREATHER. Maybe you need to watch the video again.

Just so you don't have to strain yourself, here's the post with the video explaining it in very simple terms: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2n...iff-breather-mod-dummies-pics.html#post194214

I have an 08. I haven't gotten around to the mod but I did take out the OEM when I was under there doing Zerks. It was frozen with rust. I used WD or PB and a drill bit in my hand to free it up. Word - if you don't do the mod at least do a clean up or you will ruin the seals even if you don't go in 3' of H20 every day. My brother in law had both seal go and he just drives to work and back on the high way.

If anyone has lived in or driven through Houston, you know all it takes is one good rain and you might have to drive through some deep water on your way home from work. I don't plan on going "muddin" but an hour out of my life and $20 seems worth a little piece of mind. Plus it gets a noob like me underneath my truck!:)

Just saying you are right 90% of us don't drive thru rivers or creeks but there is still a chance of having to do an "Urban water crossing"

    Doin this mod ASAP!

A very simple mod to do. I love the way it looks! It looks factory, is very functional and the fuel line is tough!

    DSC04462_6cb2c3b5978d6e9515f03e442662e06ff49250e5.jpg

In retrospect, I think the teflon tape was unnecessary. The threads are very fine. I only used two wraps and I think that was more than sufficient.

For anyone that uses 1/4" fuel line like I did, I recommend to apply some oil to the union fitting so that you can slip the fuel line over, it can take a fair amount of force and the oil made all of the difference. 3-1 oil worked perfectly.

I routed mine up and attached to the brake line bracket up high, parallel on top of the gas tank and then up to the fuel inlet secured it with a hose clamp and backed it up with a zip tie. It made for a very clean install.

Did i do ok? I just removed the factory breather, pulled the cap off of it, put my hose on it with a clamp, and screwed it back in to the diff with teflon tape. I ran the hose up near the gas cap, but inside the body, and just tie wrapped it up there with nothing on the top of the tube.

Do you really need the toyota parts? Seems this should work.

Edit: read some more pages here and I guess this isnt really sufficient since we are replacing a 1way with a 2way breather. I'll try to get the parts.

I would think that would work. The point is to allow air to be pulled into the diff when it cools so it doesn't create a vacuum that pulls water in through the oil seals. I'd say your solution accomplishes that. As long as water doesn't get sucked in from it being by the gas cap. But being behind the door should suffice. Might want to plug it if you pressure wash the truck though, just in case.

i terminated the hose behind the upper storage pocket that you have to remove to get to the back of the gas cap. I just didnt run it through the gas area.. just attached it in the open bed area back there with a loop in the hose so that no hard particles can get down in there. Probably will add some sort of small filter for dust. Dont think any water will ever get in there.

working on this mod now, my stock diff breather i pulled off, the little silver cap is real loose and theres some play in it. the new one i got from toyota, the silver cap is tight and flush against the base of the breather and does not wiggle at all. is this normal or is something wrong with it?

Are you not tossing the old one..?. Mine was not loose... but doesn't matter since we are using the new (2 way) breather instead.
