no i was planning on tossing the old one, just wondering if the new one is supposed to be tight or loose like the old one. i just didnt now if i maybe pressed the new cap down and bent something when i was sliding the tube on or something. i did the dish soap trick, but it was still tough. (i also did the dish soap on the new fitting on the pumpkin, but that one was easy to slide on and probably not necessary).

It is just a cap to keep big chunks of dirt out... Try sucking/ blowing through the barb end... you will see with the cap firm (not loose), air moves both directions.

The old one only lets air out of the rear differential. This proves that contamination gets in through the axle seals (and not the old breather), and why the front breather being used on the rear is better... as it breaks the vacuum created inside the differential and thus stops water from sucking into the diff.

    Been meaning to do this.
Well , I got off my butt and used a fitting to route it along with the abs cables, then up and over the fuel tank , I terminated inside the fender at the gas filler tube . Supported with the usual suspects;tie wraps and saftey wire . Parts: 12 bucks for breather and barb from dealer , angle fitting 3.00 , tube 3.00 .
By the way as I unscrewed the valve I heard a hissing sound ...........
    vaccum perhaps ? Hmmmm ...

Thanks NEUBS for the part numbers , pics , ect ....... great job !

ok i think im fine then. the new breather is hooked up already (and covered in soap) so i dont feel like blowing/sucking on the barb end right now. my guess is the little silver cap is sucked down right now and when air needs to be released from the diff it will pop up.

No, it doesn't move... it is just a cover and changes the 1/4" hole to thin tiny places for air to move either direction...

Why is it covered in soap??? Clean it... don't block air movement?

Oh, sure... no problem. I thought you covered it with soap for some reason! LOL

Read my How To (link below) on the breathers and see if it was any easier to follow... I didn't need any soap, it was all quite easy.

    Have a great day!

your write up is nice! pretty similar to the route i took. only difference is i used 1/4" fuel line instead of the 3/8" tube you used and ithink thats why it was harder to slip on the barbed end. all i did was put a drop of dish soap on the barbed end of both pieces and and a drop inside each end of the tube and it slid on a little easier. thanks for the help

Thanks for response. Is a one way valve available for this mod? Probably unnecessary, but would afford more protection....

The reason to do this mod is when the rear diff is submerged in water and the temp change causes the air inside to contract which causes the original valve to close. Good idea but it could pull in air through the seals which means water is going in to since the diff is submerged. Doing the mod with the 2-way valve and raising it allows air to rush in without water through an opening other than the seals. I have mine mounted on the opposite side of the plastic fuel cubby, between the fender and bed with a small bolt.

no, no, no... please read my posts here http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/tec...od-photos.html
    to end the confusion...

Water gets into the diff at the axle seals BECAUSE of the one way breather the factory has on the rear differential. Dipping hot diff. into cool water causes this vacuum affect.

Putting the same breather that is already used on the front diff (higher up, at the end of a tube)... a 2 way breather... breaks the vacuum and prevents the 'need' of the cold, dirty water from pushing into the diff at the axle seals.

If you don't want to use what Toyota uses on the front differential, then put a K&N breather filter on the end of the tube.

See the first page(s) of my thread http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/tec...od-photos.html
where the parts are shown and described.

    Thank you!:D

Well, it seems when threads get too big, then the noobee's don't bother reading the first page (where I clearly explain that it is a different breather and not the same one that was on it, where the new breather and union are shown in their Toyota package with the part numbers, why you want a 2 way breather at the end of the tube, etc.)?

LOL... Yes, but look at ALL the threads on tire sizes there are... do we merge all of them? LOL

    Have a good day Crom!

So let me get this right. The Camary breather is a two way and the one on my 2011 is a one way?
