Forgotten Turn Signal

I have done some searching to see if anyone has attempted to create a circuit that would chirp - beep - buzz ???? when the turn signal is left on for an extended period of time? Many modern cars, trucks and even some motorcycles either alert or self cancel the blinkers. As much as this annoys me when other drivers leave their signal on, I have done it and would love to know when I have done so.

 

I made a beeper for the turn signals because my scan gauge obstructed my view of the lights on the dash. I used a piezo buzzer from Radio Shack . I tucked the buzzer in the drivers kick panel, ran speaker wire to front light connector on each side. Speaker wire is fine because the current draw for the piezo is so low. I did not wnat to cut into wiring on a brand new truck so I just tucked the wires into the light connectors. I needed to install diodes to prevent backfeed from one signal to the other. Probably just as easy to install two buzzers.

I wanted it pretty loud to hear above the radio. I subsequently had to install an on/off switch in the circuit because the beeping drove the wife nuts.

 

Am I to understand that the buzzer sounds every time while the bilnker is flashing and than stops when it cancels?

 

Yep, everytime that bulb lights up, his buzzer goes off... Move to MA, no one uses their blinkers here.

 

I remember your thread from last year when you asked if anyone had done this. I think it's great you completed your mod, you're the first as far as I know. Did you take any pics of your install? If you did you make a DIY thread? I've never built anything with diodes before. Lean something new every day.

 

Not quite what I after, I would like the buzzer to sound after 2-3 minutes if the blinker is still flashing so I don't drive for 20 minutes with my blinker on. Someone must have thought through this, like I said many cars have this feature form the manufacturer. With all the electronic wizards on this site, someone must know how it can be done - come on chime in Wizards

 

I appreciate the lol, but you never drove with your blinker flicking away for no good reason. Sure you have - that's what I thought ;^)

Well the idea of the mod does sound interesting, just to see what people come up with.

 

you could probably put a timer or delay on it so it won't turn the buzzer on til it's been on for a while. This would be a decent start and with some creative wiring I think this could work for you. Or maybe not a buzzer but the old school click everytime the signal turns on. It'd be annoying at lights but if you find yourself not paying attention after a turn then it may be a tradeoff.

 

After a turn from a light the signal generally self cancels, it seem to happen more on lane changes. The timer or delay sounds like that may work but I'm not much of an electrical engineer type. That's kind of why I posted the idea here, hoping someone with electrical knowledge would know how to get it done.
