Is $15K Enough?

For a 2nd Gen Tacoma under 110k Miles? Double Cab is probably out of the question I know. Ill take a Prerunner Access Cab. My other option is a 4th gen 4runner. Seems like 4th gen 4runners are way more affordable then a Tacoma. Ill probably have to go that route if I can't find a Taco in my range.

 

Toyotas hold their value as they last forever. 15k is not enough for a 2nd gen unless you want a truck with a billion miles. Go for a 1st gen!
4th gen runners are a bit more affordable than tacomas but 4runners are for chicks and trucks are for dudes!

welcome! , my cousin just picked up a 2005 prerunner with 40,000 miles for i believe 17k, i haven't had any issues with my 2nd gen really, but the 1st gens are a bit more proven on high mileage.

 

I got my 09 PreRunner SR5 single cab for 16.9 with 32k miles certified used. So it's not completely impossible but you'll be hard pressed to find anything other than a single cab at least in around here anyways

 

Thanks guys! Maybe Ill get lucky and find a 2nd gen at a good price. 1st gens aren't bad neither. But it is soooo rare to find one with decent mileage. I really dont want to go over 110k miles. The ones I've seen in Socal still go over 13k even though they have over 150k miles. My dream would be a black or silver 1st gen double cab though.

Haha 4runners are Tacomas brother. I would like a 2002 3rd gen sport edition in black more than a 4th gen but they're very rare.

Was that 16.9 price out the door? Or was it before taxes? I'm wondering if I see something for 16 or 17k if I can talk them down to 15.5k out the door. Probably difficult since there is a high demand for Tacomas.

 

Finding a 2nd gen Taco Doublecab for $15K is tough. Before the Japan Tsunami you could find ones in that range, although they might have had a bit more than 110K miles on them. After the tsunami the prices on used went up a few thousand dollars. You might consider waiting to buy until Toyota catches up on its delivery shortages as new Taco's seem to be getting top dollar as well. I have seen salvaged title repaired/need repair Doublecabs for under $15K as also. I'm not sure if you want to mess with that though. You could try to check Craigslist in other areas (San Diego, San Francisco, Las Vegas, etc...) depending on how far you're willing to travel to get your truck. The 2 big Craigslist search sites have been shut down (Craiglook & Site Mash) so it's a lot more difficult to look all over the USA for a certain car now. Good luck and I'll let you know if I run into a truck in your price range.

Thanks a lot. Hopefully by January, Toyota catches up on their delivery shortages. Thats when I will be buying. Ill take an Access Cab Prerunner too but I would like a double cab. A buddy a mine has a 06 double cab with 86k miles. He was gonna sale it to me for 14k but decided to keep it. I probably could have flipped it and made a profit on it. I wouldnt do that though.

 

good luck on finding a low mileage 4 door 1st gen or 2002 sport edition. I searched the whole country for both for a few months and they are hard to find with under 75k. Theres a bunch out there but with over 110k people hold on to those trucks forever. 4x4 1st gen 4door tacomas and 4x4 3ed gen runners with low mileage are hard to come by.

You might find a prerunner or 2x4 runner. Where I live i have to have 4x4.

 

Check this one out on SF Craigslist. It's more miles than you want, but it seems like a pretty good deal. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/cto/2571979014.html . They're asking $12,500.

 

$15k would be a steal for a double cab. I got lucky with mine but it needed a few minor things fixed. 07 DCSB TRD Off Road 6speed 74k miles for $18,999. Check around at the small obscure dealers that might not necessarily show up on autotrader or google.

 

I paid 17,500 for a four year old 40K mile 4x4 Access Cab. I see no reason why you couldn't find a prerunner Access for 15K if you are willing to buy one with that many miles. Maybe even a double cab.

 

I just got a 2006 Prerunner Offroad Access Cab with a camper for $9900.

103,000 miles, very clean though.

(except for paint chip issue that will be fixed within a week)

Also you live in LA, grab an Autotrader and check into buying a car from out-of state. Most Toyos will meet your emissions standards. Or check eBay.

Really? That cheap? Here in SoCal, that would still go over 15k easy. I thought about out of state before but, I not sure of the procedure to register an out of state car in California.

It could be salvaged, but I guess you'll never know unless you ask. My 2006 has 45K miles so 59K is reasonable for the year. From the ad it seems like the guy is a dealer or he sells a lot of cars because he leaves very little information and he wants you to call. He might be trying to gauge who comes out to look at the car (he might not want someone to look who asks too many questions or is savvy at buying cars). The truck does look nice in the photos. If you do consider buying...buy a Carfax report. Carfax isn't 100% full-proof, but it's a good start. If an accident never gets reported to the insurance then Carfax may not have the info. Next, find out how long the seller has owned the car. If it's for a very little time or if it's registered in someone elses name then that could be trouble too. Even though it seems like a good deal I would have a mechanic shop check it out also. Good luck.

 

Don't let "out of state" cars scare you. Most of them should still pass California smog requirements because the cars have to meet a federal standard when they're new. When you bring a car from out of state to CA. you might have to get a VIN# verification by the CHP (to ensure that the car isn't stolen), but other than that just take your bill of sale, car title, or whatever paperwork comes with the car with you to the DMV. If you get a good enough deal then it should be worth a little extra hassle.
