Backup Lights?

Can you recommend a pair of backup lights for my truck? Im thinking about installing them under the rear bumper. Is that a good idea?

 

i have one that plugs into the 7 pin trailer harness, works good. and also try to SEARCH

 

It's a good idea IF you don't go off-roading or drive over curbs or anything else that will break the light off it's mount.

Do you find that you don't have enough light form the stock reverse lights?

Check your local laws to make sure that adding lights does not violate some obscure code.

 

Screw the laws these are what I have hooked into the reverse lights and on a aux to blind people that ride my ass

 

KC sells a 2x6" reverse light. I think around 80 to 90 bucks for the kit

I have had them for over a year and they work great.



Mine are wired to a rocker switch in the cab, so I can turn them on at any thime, regardless of ignition power being on or not.

I use them for backing out of longer driveways, hooking up to the trailer, unhooking the trailer, general lighting while camping/fishing. Very useful.

One thing though... I got a little too ambitious last weekend and folded one of them back under the bumper when I tried to drive through a ditch. The departure angle is slightly less with the lights on the underside of the bumper . No harm to anything other than the light, though I did bend my 7-pin connector a little. I just replaced the light.

For the price, I'm impressed.

 

I have a $40 pair of fog lights from Kragen mounted in the same holes under my rear bumper. They have been there for almost two years, and were on a 2wd Dakota before that. They make a huge difference in light with the tinted windows. The trailer hitch hangs down enough that they are safe unless you are a serious wheeler. I am not. Mine are wired on a dedicated 12 gauge wire with a relay directly from the battery. Three way switch on the dash for on, off, and on with factory reverse lights. Totally worth the time to set it up.

 

X2 on this kit. I custom mounted mine on my first gen without a hitch (see link in sig). I have pix in my gallery too showing how well it lights up behind the truck at night.

 

Is it easy to mount these in the back? I'm a noob to when it comes to electrical and I wouldn't want to mess something up. Is there some sort of guide?
Is there any other lights that you could prefer? Maybe something wrong and that could be mounted on either side of the trailer hitch, under the truck?

Here is a pic of my PIAA's. Great fog light and back up light. wired them with a switch inside of the cab. Just ran new wire to battery and to switch and back to lights.

P.S. I know the paint is coming off the bumper and its not PLASTIDIP. Rustoleum. Just for the Plastidip Nazi's out there

I dunno. I can see a custom bumper with two lights installed in it. What are you seeing?

 

The Pilot kit is very simple and is designed to attach to a square-tube hitch receiver, but you can attach the lights wherever you are creative enough to do it. The wiring is designed for them to come on only when you put the truck in reverse: a tap to the reverse light wire, and a ground. The relay stuff others mentioned is only if you want to switch them on at will, like aux. loading lights when parked.

I see what he's getting at. Where the lights are in the bumper, it looks like the pavement, like he's looking through the bumper. Or he's wondering why someone would be so stupid as to potentially cause an accident by blinding those behind them. But I suppose he could just be acting like a "Bro" and shooting off. Either way, time to grow up.

You can always flush mount them to the bumper. Measure twice, then cut out the holes with a body saw.

 

If you did that, how would you aim them? I know I spent some time aiming mine to be most effective.

 

Does anyone have the PIAA kit? Are they worth the extra $60 over the KC Lites?
