First Tacoma

Just ordered my 2012 Tacoma DC TRD 4x4 with the Off-Road Package. Fully loaded with the new touch screen enTune thingy. Should be here tomorrow or Thursday.

Not new to the 4x4 community at all but going to be getting into the long travel stuff after some research on this site and a few others.

Any insight to where to start?

 

Locker anytime, skids, build some sliders, tires and lift...

 

Rear locker handled. Probably going to go with my standard "start with sliders" procedure.

My other rig is a LX450...nuf said.

 

Add a relay and you can engage your locker in 2wd 4hi and 4lo. Stock can only engage in 4lo. Did it this weekend finally, not hard.

 

How big you planning on going for your tires?

 

If you're going really serious with it, do an internal cage. One of the most overlooked things I see here.

Even if you don't need it, it's good to have. Like a condom.

I would rather have one and not need it, then need one and not have it.

make sure it's a 12V DC relay

pull the glove box out, at the top where the latch is, pull the plastic piece off after removing the 10mm bolt and you'll see the 4wd ecu...follow the steps in the pdf on the first link and wire up with the 218 relay with the last link setup

 

with a 3" lift you'll clear 33s with minor trimming...i'm sure you can cut the cab mounts yourself if you rub...check your back spacing on your wheels because the stock wheels will not clear the uca's with 33s

sounds like you'll be doing some coil overs at some point which will also require new uca's but you'll still need to watch the back spacing on your wheels

 

First thing I'm doing when this truck is delivered. I like the idea of locker in 2wd.

More tire, less BS. After some research I plan on doing it all in one shot so I'm not redoing and cutting stuff that I really don't need to in the long run with the setup I want.

When you hitting the trail next?

 

so many times where a trail isn't that hard but is a loose bastard where it will come in handy....i'm also thinking during the winter it could come in handy..

i'll be heading up saturday up mcclellan mtn with a buddy in a rubicon with the gfs...it's not really a hard trail but will be good getting up...trail is fun in the spring when it's loaded with water, but i'm sure it's dried up a ton by now..i'm sure we can get your new taco up there...might add some pinstriping along the way though

still some time left to hit up some harder trails too, i'm usually able to shift things around enough to wheel on the weekends

The rule of thumb when going long travel is, figure out how much parts and labor are going to cost and then double that.
