Damm this thread is still going? The video of the FJs climbing that hill proves that the last guy who went up that shit doesn't know how to properly drive! :D

Bottom line is it comes down to the driver behind the wheel. A-TRAC, Lockers, LSD it doesn't matter if you don't know how to use it. I've seen with my own eyes a dude in a non-locked 4Runner I mean open/open go through en entire trail that was giving locked trucks a hard time! This dude just breezed through it...why?

Because it was COLE MOTHAFUCKING TRICKLE himself! :D

Wow!!! I hate to say it but this drivel is sad and they type of stuff that has driven me in to hiding!!! On one of my last outings, my ATRAC blew my diff, and one CV at one time!!! I wouldn't believe it but it did happen.

    That steak? Was it locked?

And yes I was kidding about the ATRAC blowing my parts - I don't mind having ATRAC - I use it when I'm drunk. That way I don't have to remember to turn it off after I've got around - or should I say hung up on an obstacle!!! Actually, B, I only had ATRAC the last time we did Dishpan - I may have kept my momentum had I had my front locker that day! :(

and no, my front wheels were not in that direction when I was in the middle of that attempt! :)

If any of you know me, my limit is typically 1 beer maybe two. That is unless Brandon's mom breaks out the tequila!!! :drunk:

Oh yeah as long as we are talking about this, if I was to do this Tacoma Experiment again, I would probably get a baseline truck or a sport and fit them with two ARBs. I have completely given up on the e-locker as a locker in the rear - not as strong as an ARB in an 8.4 and response is not as quick as an ARB. And regarding the ATRAC - it is certainly better than nothing - and that's about what it costs Toyota to add it to an ABS truck. I would love to get them to give us the option to lock each wheel individually!!! Now that would have me truly singing it's praises. Until that time, well, its better than nothing.

I would also add that many of us have heard that disturbing noise that you hear when you loose a ring and pinion! And it is true that ATRAC would cause less potential damage but it wouldn't get you some of the places that idiots like me like to go! :)

I actually learned a lot from this thread ...

I have an 07 TRD with the rear locker/open front and don't have any mountains to climb where I live so I didn't really know or care about the difference between these systems. I usually only pay attention to features when I'm about to buy vehicle, otherwise I just live with what I have.

Thanks for arguing with each other, I know more now :D

Hi Paul, miss seeing you here (or in Baja)! Thanks for your input, but you have me concerned with the first comments (before I realized you were joking)! Also on the Sport... it would need to be a pre-'09 one for the 8.4" diff. right?

You are one of the guys who laughed about the Sport hood scoop, and even going as far as saying you wished you could invert the standard hood to make it even lower! I thought that was 'gold'! LOL

Anyway, hope to wheel with you and Zoom again... We will try and do the Cleghorn run this Saturday... never been there, hope it has some traction sections! Neal Johns lives nearby in Lytle Creek, fyi.

I know your ego is goign to get boosted but Saturday I rescued TRD and the the guy had print out of your ATRAC info thread. I recognized TW page and your famous "ATRAC info" you repeat so often.
Unfortunately for him he was stuck like mofo sideways on iced up hill.

Sorry, but my ego has nothing to do with my posts here... I try to provide information on the Tacoma and where I have gone with mine.

How about some details as to what YOU think happened and how YOU made it better for him.. you know, stuff that could actually help others on TW.

    completely stock
all trd sports have the 8.4. pre 09 had the 8.4 with mechanical lsd (but it was still an 8.4) and the new ones have the same axle as the base models

i still think ATRAC is an ok feature but a stock truck will never test the full potential of it.

IMO you would be way better off buying a base model and saving the $4k on the offroad package and using it for arbs front/rear, lift, tires and armor.

for the same investment you would have a truly amazing expedition rig.

so far i only have $20k into my truck

Still doesn't help anyone for that answer... Sounds like a story unless there are details...

It is a no brainer, but driving skill is always better than traction controls. Maybe why I have better results with A-TRAC than you do with lockers is that I have almost 40 years of driving skill off road?

Well I think you should be happy that people use your info. ;)

I did made him better, I showed him that 16 years old Land Cruiser can run circles around 2gen TRD :D
I am guessing he decided to take is GF and show off his brand new TRD  , maybe test some of the "awesome" traction futures (using your info page). Well that did not work out for him. I found him stuck in the middle of the hill, sideways, blocking traffic both ways. i guess so much for skid control. I had to crawl over the snow bank to go above him, then tow strap his rear end and pull him backwards up the hill.
