From what I've read 4.88's are better for the auto Trans and 5.29's are tits with the 5 speed. I'm going with 5.29 gears with 37's

5.29s seems good for 37s lol but i have heard 4.88s is great for 33-35s.

    In a 2nd Gen.

4.88's with 33's would be good on a 1st Gen.
Some of the guys on TTORA running 4.88's on the 1st Gen with the 5 speed have said they should of went 5.29's but they do a lot more wheeling then most here. I'm going 5.29's with the 37's because it's a good balance but I might go even higher I just haven't decided yet.

even higher?? jesus..lol and yea that is true. Don't 4.88s and 33'' tires go back close to stock gearing?? :notsure:

since you transforming your ride into a trail rig maybe higher would be better..

Don't gears start to get weaker the higher up you go? Would suck to have a built axle with the weak link being the ring gear. Far easier to replace shafts or drive shafts.

    Me too:)

4.88's will be perfect with 35's I think. And if you ever get a transfer case the low range will be plenty low enough.

    Timing belt question?

Anyone have any tricks to getting the crankshaft pulley off without using those special holding tools. Ive heard of using an impact to whip it off quickly but i dont think it can fit between the rad.

I've heard use a breaker bar against the frame, give it a quick crank. I haven't tried this myself.

this works, but then you have no way of re-torquing it. And you do not want to get the torque wrong on that particular bolt.

Wowsers. I'm thinking 5.29s would be plenty for 37s with your manual tras and V6. But hey, why not go higher if your making a trail rig, right?
Interesting...... from what I've read, (in regards to 35s) 4.88s (or even 4.56s) are better for man trans, and you could go with either 4.88s or 5.29s for auto trans (both senarios with 3.4 V6).

It sounds like your saying you need to re-gear even deeper (lower, or numerically higher) with a man trans than an auto, but wouldn't it be the other way around?

I've been using this calculator, recently, to run all sorts of senarios. If you haven't seen it already, I'm sure you'll find it very useful: http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html
Yes, since you've got the V6, use it mostly as a DD, and don't have many hills in your area, 4.56 is a good ratio, but 4.88s wouldn't hurt either...... especially if you wanted to do more off-roading.

And, yes, gears get stronger as they get higher (numerically lower). ;)For example: 4.88s would be weaker than 4.56s because the pinion gets smaller as you go lower (numerically higher).
Cool. And that's a great point about the transfer case .... I can always add goodies to make it even lower in the future. And thanks, Steven, I'm pretty sure I'll go with 4.88s, now. Especially, since I drive on the freeway a lot.

    That is correct.

And yeah if you go hardcore you could add a crawler box down the road.
