Are sliders really good steps? I think they are too high; almost as high as the door sill, so they don't really serve a purpose as steps. N-Fab and nerve bars (although I know almost everyone here hates them) are lower and function better as steps.
It all depends on the intended purpose. I don't go off-road in rocky areas ( there are no rocks in south Florida), but my wife and kids will have a hard time getting in my truck without the nerve bars.

If your not going to do a lot of offroading I would go N-Fab or Predator. I got the Predator steps from the factory when I bought my truck. The N-Fabs have a glossy black whereas the Predator steps have the textured black. I love the steps.

Lurking, as I have the same question as the OP. It's like rock climbing for me to get into my truck, yet I park downtown ALL the time and would like to have "low profile door protection."

I will be getting Relentless Fabrication Sliders with kickouts. I off road and don't need steps to get in. Sliders like previously stated are around door sill height and can make a good step. N-Fab and others drop down and can interfere with off roading (a guy I wheeled with had them and hung them up on rocks that everyone else cleared) but will provide a lower step than sliders if that is what is needed.

Leaning towards Avid personally, as I don't want to weld or modify the truck (don't they have enough "frame issues" as it is, without drilling more holes?).

I do see one big glaring problem with such a high step and being of a gender that is often caught in outerwear other than pants. If you're modding for the ladies, perhaps...ah, how do I say this....mod for THEM and put in a step, instead of modding for YOURSELF and putting in sliders. Get my drift? :D

Well my wife doesn't go wheelin' in a dress or skirt. When she does wear a dress or skirt we take the car.

sweet, got it. Okay, back on topic! All I own are trucks now, so, no more skirts for me, WOO!!!

Seriously, though, Avid does sound like a good urban mix of protection and function.

Oh come on, Mr Pib (or is it Dr Pib) would enjoy seeing you get in a truck with a skirt on (especially if it was lifted {the skirt or the truck})

Like others have said, steps if you don't go off road. Sliders do work as steps, but depending on how they are painted, they can be kind of slick when using as steps. Also they are usually round tube instead of a flat surface like the steps.

I used to have the oval steps and they worked great - as steps, but weren't going to help me as much on the trails. I put some skateboard grip tape on the sliders which helped quite a bit, but the wife still sees fit to complain once in a while.
