All you Tundra owners, I could use some advice. Hope this is a good thread to ask as I could not find another thread with Tundra owners!

I am looking at selling my 04 Tacoma and picking up a first gen Tundra for the extra towing capacity. Specifically looking at 1st gens as I can get a decent one without having to put in any extra money when I sell my Tacoma. Here are my questions (appreciate the help):

Is the towing capacity listed at 6800 or 7100lbs on the V8 manual access cabs?
Could someone tell me real world gas mileage on V8 manual 4x4 (it has to be 4x4 for the work required).
Does the first gen Tundra have a "towing package" that comes with wiring harness, hitch, etc or did that not start until later years?

Anyone with towing experience I would enjoy hearing your experience. I am debating whether to go this direction as I know the first gen Tundra are really well built and last forever or going with a Ford or Dodge 3/4 ton diesel for the ridiculous towing capacity (would allow me to tow 10,000 lbs plus). I am concerned with reliability on a Ford or Dodge so trying to decide which direction to go. Thanks!

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
To my knowledge, there is no V8 Manual. Only Auto. The V6's had an optional manual.

    6900#

My MPG is a steady 17.7.

Yes, it has a towing package. The only complaint I have with towing is actually a suspension issue. Mine sags like a SOB with a load in the back or on the tongue. Toyota failed on the leaf package IMHO. I am planning on getting a 3 pack leaf from wheelers in the future to help with that issue.

A little FYI. The TRD's do not have lockers. It's just a suspension package. so don't waste money on one of those. They "might" have the optional LSD though.

    Thanks for Great info:
So that is why I can never find a V8 manual for sale...only came in the V6. I was wondering about that.
Good to know about the leaf springs and TRD package.

Yeah, I was disappointed too when I was looking for one. I would have killed to have a manual.

Ya, I really want a manual for towing. I just feel I am able to control the load and vehicle so much better with a manual when it comes to starting with a heaving load, slowing down, and going up and down hills.
Your statement about leaf springs concerns me. I intend to be hauling heavy loads near the tow limit (wood planks and beams on flat bed trailer) so would have to upgrade leaf springs. 17.7 mpg is good. I mean, I only get 17-19 in my tacoma, may be slightly more on highway but not much.
    Good info to know. Thanks
Now, I need to do some more research on Dodge cummins (5.9l) and Ford Powerstrokes (7.3l). I figure if I am going to go American, then might as well go diesel.

Put it this way, the leafs on the first gen tundies are practically the same as the current Tacos. I've never measured them, but I'd be willing to bet they are interchangeable. It's a 3 leaf + overload.

    yea i cant wait!

anyone have a suggestion for a good sounding muffler for the 5.7? I want to get a nice aggresive tone at idle and acceleration (NO DRONE though) but am also not ready to drop 500-900 on a cat back system. any good mufflers out there i can just add to the stock piping?
