How much of a difference does an oil change and new plugs make?

    How much of a difference does a new oil change and new spark plugs make?
    Need some help, my engine light keeps turning on and makes my gear change lag..

    A pretty big difference if you have not done it in a while, you should always change these out as needed. I dont know how it would contribute to your transmission lagging on gear changes though, hopefully someone chimes in on that.

    New motor oil should be done at least every 7500 miles or every 6 months which ever comes first that's the max Toyota recommends and that is for on road no towing just normal driving. Personally I do mine every 5k miles just so that it's easier to keep up with. Not sure what the rating on spark plugs are I think it's like every 50k but my plugs had over 100k when I changed them a few days ago, I don't thank that the previous owner took very good care of it but when I changed them I could immediately tell the difference just from the start because it started so much easier.

    I'd go with the NGK's. Have yours ever been changed? Why I say NGK is because in the 115k miles that were on the old plugs then NGK plugs showed less wear than the Denso. If the plugs are the ones that came from the factory you will have NGK on the passenger bank and Denso on the drivers side bank. You can look in my gallery and see them side by side to do that click the little camera icon under my post count and info pane to the far left over there<<<<. They are a little pricier but imo worth it.

    An oil change will not affect the way the car runs. New spark plugs will if the old ones are worn out.

    Toyota's "1998 SUV and Truck: OM Supplement: Scheduled Maintenance" Guide, available from the Toyota Owner's Site and attached here, recommends oil changes every 5K miles for "most driving conditions" or 7.5K miles for "light, non-commercial duty for distances greater than five miles in temperate climates." Non-platinum/iridium spark plugs should be replaced every 30K miles or 24 months.

    That ^ is an EXCELLENT writeup on spark plugs - highly recommended reading. NGK BKR5EKB-11 or Denso K16TR11 are both good plugs for our engines.
