Hello, this my first post, Well I think I blew my rear end. I was trying to free a frozen trailer from the mud. I tried in 2wd nothing, 4wd, nothing, 4 low was when it happened a very loud bang and truck lurched forward. Truck will not move in 2wd and nasty growling noise followed by loud clunking noise from rear end . I had to have it towed all the way back home . Drive shaft is intacted but not sure if it is spinning or not. Anybody have any thoughts? thanks Pete

Oh my. I'm not educated on this enough to help you but I just wanted to say I hope it's not too bad (although it sounds it may be) :(

Welcome to TW by the way. They guys here know a lot and I'm sure someone with knowledge will chime in soon.

with the truck in 2wd, and the front wheels chocked I would jack up the rear end and try spinning the rear tires. Sounds like you found the weakest link somewhere. Might have taken some teeth off the rear gears. 4-Lo is no joke on these trucks especially in 1st gear.

A bunch a cool stickers, a bada ass MetalMiller Tx Longhorns grill emblem painted Hemi Orange, JBA long tube headers with o2 sims, Diff breather mod, Red LED interior lights, Fancy head unit that plays ipod n movies, Also DIY install factory stuff like, factory cruise control, factory intermittent wipers, OME nitro struts with 886x springs and toy tec top plate, JBA high caster UCA's for better alignmnet and dey beefier too, Old Man Emu Dakar leaf springs in da rear with the gear, U bolt flipper, Ivan Stewart TRD rims with 33" K Bro 2's, some bad ass weather tech floor liners so I don't muck up my interior, an ATO shackle flipper for mo travel in da rear wit the gear, also super shiny Fox 2.0 shocks back there too, all sorts of steal armor for bouncing off of the rocks like demello sliders, AP front skid, trans skid, n transfer skid, demello gas tank skid, and a tough as nails ARB bumper with warn 8k winch, I'm sure there's more
First; Put the rear up on jack stands, block the front wheels, and do a drain n fill on the diff fluid. While it's draining, check all the u-joints and center support bearing for any kind of damage. The u-joints should have ZERO play in them, while the center bearing has a little because it is surrounded by a bushing. After the diff is done draining, filler back up N tighten your plugs.
Second; Check the old fluid for heavy metal particles. Also the drain plug has a magnet on it, clean the shavings off of it before putting it back on the diff. You can strain the old oil some how either with a paint strainer or a fine mesh strainer. Small dust like shavings are normal, but larger chucks present a problem.
Third; While the rear is still on jacks and the truck is in 2wd and the tires are on securely, start your truck and put it in gear. Release the brake and listen for noises. Also, once it's safe, look underneath for any unusual vibrations and noises to pin point.
Fourth; Report back with findings, good luck

Contrary to above, check your gear oil for metal chunks before replacing with new. No sense in adding new gear oil if the diff needs to be replaced. I don't think you will need to strain anything. Sounds like you're going to have lots of chunkies in there...

you blew your rear diff! i know first hand what it sounds and feels like since i have blown 4 in the last 2 years...

best way to confirm is to safely raise the rear end off the ground, and while it's in 2wd put put it into L and let rear wheels turn under their own power at IDLE..no need to feather the gas peddle. letting it idle will be fine. if you hear noise from the rear pumkin area it's your ring and pinion gears!!....a common problem with our trucks

check out my write up for removing the rear 3rd member from the axle housing
