As long as there's not metal shavings flying out of his transfer case, hopefully he'll only need some minor maintenance. :)

Basically, 2 months after I got my 4Runner, I took it out to Cleghorn for it's first off-road excursion. Both of my CVs failed, and my transfer case had metal shavings coming out of it. According to The Truck Shop, the previous owner had almost never used his 4x4 system so the first time I went to use (well not first, I had it in the snow prior to this...), I guess I should say test it's limits, all the gears in the transfer case grinded and my CVs had almost no grease in them. Fun stuff!

I wasn't even doing anything too crazy. It crapped on me at the first bypass.

I just didn't know that the previous owner didn't take care of the 4x4 system. If I had known that beforehand I would've made sure everything was in working order before I pushed it.

At least now I know that if I ever get another used 4x4 in the future to make sure the transfer case and CVs are good to go before using them...dumb ass previous owner.

    Hey Tom
The upper portion of the shock snapped. The rubber buushings and top plates were still attached to the shock mount. Everything was just tightened last month after my ocotillo wells trip after returning home.(lost a sway bar nut and decided to give everything a "one over")
I am very confused as to why the shock snapped where it did....when it did.
I am not out to point fingers....you gotta pay to play I suppose. But I was comming down the backside of the tower hill @ cleg when it snapped. Far from "gnarly":p

As I watched it I was thinking - "It's amazing that more of these guys don't get hurt!"

You may have had the top too tight too. Those bushings are supposed to allow a cone of movement.

Did Mario have something fail? Locked? Are you still talking about Mario when you talk about locked?

honestly, my experiences from being on the trail tells me that it could have been anything that caused that failure..maybe the top plate and the bushings were over torqued like what HBMurphy suggested and it was just a matter of time..maybe a rock or a branch or even the Cleghorn Chupacabra got caught by the wheel and rotated up with the rotation and took out the shock. did you modify the rear bump stop or removed it entirely? how are your rear links, are they bent yet especially the lowers? hows your pan hard link?.. many factors and variables that could have led to that failure. and when i see stuff like that i'm more on the lines of thinking that's cool..instead of being totally surprised.
