You guys think a 2 ton comealong will be sufficient if I stay out of the deep mud/lakes? I would like to have something if I manage to get myself stuck cruising around. I know if the truck is completely stuck I should probably factor dry weight of the truck + friction which is plenty more than 2tons, I just can't justify spending a few hundred on a 3,4+ ton puller if I plan on getting a winch at some point.

 

Colin, If you need one, i have one you can borrow, but you would have to come and get it. Dont know which would be cheaper, buying one, or the gas to come borrow it.

if you're going to use a 2 ton, try to find one with a nylon strap instead of a cable, like this vvv

that way if you do overload it, there will be much less spring back, and will be much safer.

your other options for more strength at less cost is a hi-lift jack with. tow strap on one end and chain on the other, and you can use it as a come-along.

or...

what i'd recomend is pick up a harbor freight 4 ton come-along for next to nothing. i have one of them. i was a little skeptical of a 4 ton puller for $40 or whatever they cost, but i took my own measurements of the cable, did the math, and it is actually an 8000 lb cable believe it or not. the catch is that the handle on it would make it pretty hard to actually pull 8k with one, it needs to be about a foot longer.

you're a good 1-1.5 hour drive from me, so it'll be a bunch cheaper for me to just buy one. plus, i figure i'll probably only be needing it more come time for the rear long travel. but thank you for the offer.

 

No problem, figured i would offer cause i didnt think you would need it very much after your project, i dont know if i have ever used mine, maybe 1 time if that.

 

i can't say i've ever needed one until now, but with this new rack, if i ever need to take it off i'll need the bit, and when i build the rear long travel, i may even need to take the entire bed off at some point. maybe i'll buy two lol.

with how big the bed bolts are and how strong the bed is, i'm assuming "fucker's not going anywhere" is the propper torque spec?

 

I love that torque spec, just dont tell john, he might get mad.

 

so i dont think those steps would work out. id spend another 100 bucks in gas going to get them. and i dont think shipping would be cheap enough to make it worth it.

 

wow, yet another reason why i've never boughting anything from sears....

t55 torx at sears is over $11. my local tractor supply and northern tool both have them for $4.

sears is really screwing people over these days. they also sell the exact air compressor i had at citrus for $100. i got it at HF for $40. it is manufactured by the same company, and just colored/branded acordingly. what a rip off.....rant over.

I was going to, but i was able to "aquire" a new updated motor, but i am planning on taking my old one apart just to see whats up and maybe have it for a backup.

 

Ok, just took my old one apart, greased it where they said to, about to pull in a taco for service, i will plug it into it and see if the squeek is gone.

WOW, quick, easy fix, with the blower motor out, it takes 10 minutes to take it apart, grease it, and have it back together. I did it twice cause it seemed like there was still a slight squeek, but to me it's night and day. Mine was squeeking like crazy before. Now seems nice and quiet.

 

Thanks, I figured it would be pretty easy. Mine barely squeaks, but I might as well grease it up before the bushing wears out of tolerance and starts making some real noise.
