I love my 2010, but am thinking it's more than I need as I only drive 5k miles a year.

So I spotted this 2003 Xtracab V6 at my local dealer with just over 65k on the odometer. It's a beautiful looking truck, but I'm thinking there has to be something wrong with it as they're only asking $15,995 for it.

Note that it says it's an automatic, but the pics clearly show it to be a manual. It looks to have a kickass stereo with sub, a nice shell, great aftermarket wheels, grill guard and fogs. Anybody recognize this truck???

Only immediate concern is Carfax says it's had 4 owners .. though it lumps 1 & 2 together .. so maybe that's just when it was paid off and ownership transferred from bank. Owner 3 owned it for only 2y5mo and owner 4 owned it for 1mo. Only 1 month! Something's not right.

The first owner also owned the truck in DC. So frame rust could be a definite issue. Beyond that, it has lived in NC and CO. Anyway, here are the links to the pertinent info. Let me know what you think...

    http://www.toyotaofcoloradosprings....-springs-f79df6be0a0a000201784d10d0780bf1.htm

    http://www.carfax.com/VehicleHistory/p/Report.cfx?vin=5TEWN72N13Z196838&partner=DLR_3&zipCode=

UPDATE - Dealer's gonna wholesale the truck as his mechanic found rust on the frame that they're not comfortable passing it off to a retail customer.

Hey at least they were honest.

Looks good to me. Just make sure it is a TRD with the elocker, people like to add stickers for no reason. $16k seems a bit high to me, but that's normal for a dealer.

When I was looking for my 1st gen, almost every dealer was asking way too much for 1st gens in not that good of condition.

How many miles did your taco have when you bought it?

I paid 16k for my non-TRD tacoma with 120k miles. lol I had to buy it though, parents got tired of taking me to the car dealerships. Haha.

Yeah see $16k here in Colorado is dirt cheap. I've seen similar 1st gens with up to 75k miles going for $20k easy out here. That's why I wonder what's wrong. Given the short ownership of the last two people, I'm thinking it must be something like terrible gas mileage .. something you wouldn't notice on the lot or a test drive.

When looking at cars I saw all sorts of things like this when running the vin. One wonders if it was the way the dealership purchased the vehicle that shows it is another owner?

With car dealer vehicles (using autocheck which I ran on this one, last few days of subscription! lol) you usually see that the car was either traded and it shows up in "dealer inventory" or that it went to auction and it will show the auction and which area and then dealer inventory. This one shows nothing as far as dealer inventory. Just makes you wonder if someone actually at the dealer owns it and is trying to sell it. Just not seen that before.

Might also be a delay in reporting, but not experienced that before either and I've look at quite a number.

Looking at it, the first owner moved quite a bit (seen that before as well) and did not drive the truck much. About 6k annually. So, my first thoughts and the area it was from, was that the owner had a couple of vehicles and split the miles he/she was doing between this and the other car. Would wonder if the truck was used for bad weather driving more. Keeping the car in the garage when it was snowing outside.

As such, I'd really have a good look underneath. Even though dealer has had a look (service reports below for you) ask to see it on a rack in the service department. Look for corrosion and see if any bolt heads are getting eaten away. Look for any strange coatings as well like that spray undercoat. Saw a car once that had spray undercoat and when you prodded at it with a screwdriver it ended up having cardboard over rust holes and then the undercoat sprayed over to hold it in place and make everything look okay. While you are under there, look for signs (even though nothing on the car fax) of overspray like any repairs done. Seen a few that show nothing, but obviously have had paint work done on panels here and there.

Don't know about there, but even the big dealers here pay guys who show up in a van and do paint out in the back lot to repair chip damage, scratches, bumper repair etc. Looks good on the lot, but how long is the paint going to hold up..... Pays to look.

Drive it an make sure nothing odd going on and that everything works with no funny noises. I know what you mean on pricing as here the prices are crazy too. Anything that comes close to being on kbb values for condition does not last a day and it is sold. Last one I tried to look at posted a for sale ad on CL at 9 pm and at 8 am the next day it was sold. Most seem to be sold at over kbb by quite a margin in this area. Even so, for that sort of money I'd feel it better be in primo shape. I'd not be forgiving of anything that does not work or is damaged.

That carfax second owner looks strange. Looks like they put 1,600 miles on it in a year and 8 months. Then when they sold it to the NC person it shows purchased in colorado springs.

Autocheck shows no accidents or title issues. Only finance and emissions reported.

    See if history will show.

^ Think about those locations, and where it ended up. That was most certainly a "military" truck. Previous owner(s) kept getting deployed. That would explain the little use and the locations it landed.

    Yep, military vehicle.

However, people that run used vehicles through multiple states, usually are trying to remove a rebuilt title.

Sorta like a proxy server. The more you go through, the harder it is to trace the origin.

    Temporary thread jack!

Left bottom corner, the white one. Just drag the cursor and click on it.

It will ask for a reason, you don't have to answer, but it's neat if you do. I just started answering them myself.

You live in California. Everyone wants pre-runners there. Come to Oregon and you will see rigs like the OP is listing for $19K easily. 4X4 Toyotas are THE thing up here.

I'de be concerned about the number of owners, the price seems OK I think the dealer would be willing to come down on the price, I would think that Car fax would of caught the fact that it were a rebuilder if it was, drive it, take it to a Toyota dealer for a check up if your not sure.
