Review Fold a cover G4 elite

^^ I chose not to install that part (assuming you're talking about the hook and latch for when the cover is closed that "locks" the tailgate). At the time I didn't want to drill into the truck. So, I bought the pop n' lock. So far so good. Although I've heard some guys having issues with the key hole getting stiff due to salty/sandy air getting to it.

Thanks to all the tips/pointers on this thread... It definitely helped my decision on getting a G4 Fold-a-Cover. Had it installed yesterday and we had a thunderstorm the same day. I'm happy to say the bed stayed dry with the exception of 2 little spots which will be easily fixed.

The cover works as expected, locks are extremely nice and it makes the truck look pretty cool.

I'm actually shopping around for a newer tundra right now and this bed cover looks like it will be a great addition to the new purchase!

 

Installed the G4 a couple of days ago. Someone here mentioned about the windrails tilting when you place the cover for the alignment and proper gaps. To avoid this, I used 2 packing boxes I had and 2 phone books to support the weight of the cover. One phone book on top of box for the 2 front panel and same setup for the rear 2 panels. I was able to line up the wind rails and the cover with ease. The only problem I had was that the OE plastic rail cover had some movement from side to side. Other than that everything went smoothly.

Installed mine last night, picked it up from Truck Alterations, ordered it last Wednesday night, showed up at the door one week later. Very happy with the service from Truck Alterations, also very happy with the cover. Install, wow, what a pain in the butt trying to line up the cover with rails not yet attached to the bed. As someone said in another post, the weight of the cover pulls in the rails, hard to feel comfortable and confident when you start peeling off the PSA tape. I am a smidge off, not bad. I took my time had one beer and stopped to eat a double double with fries and a coke, finished or near finished in just under three hours. I need to fine tune the latches, I think maybe another hour or so and that will include caulking and more weather stripping to make it waterproof. I give it four dancing tacos out of five.

 

DO NOT BUY FOLD-A-COVER FROM STEFFENS AUTOMOTIVE! You will never be able to remove it and reinstall it because of an obvious flaw that they know about, but refuse to correct. All the mounting hardware is custom machined aluminum, and all the fasteners are stainless, creating a dissimilar metal reaction that oxidizes the fasteners into the hardware causing the 1/4" Stainless bolts to break off if you try to remove them. Not only that, but they sell replacement hardware kits with about $20 worth of materials for $100 plus $12 shipping! So a couple years after paying over $800 for a Fold-a cover, if you need to remove or adjust your cover in any way, you will be forced to pay $112 for a new hardware kit made out of the same faulty materials.

 

While I can't speak to your situation specifically... I have removed 4-5 year old Fold-A-Covers several times and had no issue removing the bolts...

Not saying you are wrong... just saying its never been an issue for us.

 

Just installed mine three weeks ago. Had to do it in the cold cause the garage heater broke and needed it done that week for a trip. Of course it is 70 degrees now. I am cosmetically not perfect on the side rails and I think they moved a bit due to bad adherence but still love the cover. I did drill the tailgate and it actually seems to lock it great even when I have yanked pretty hard. I am still looking to seal up everything as watertight as possible but had no immediate problems with suitcases in back of truck while raining.

Has anyone had to reinstall the rails yet?

I bought my Fold-a-Cover G4 Elite last August, and I am still very happy with my purchase.
The cover keeps my equipment secure and dry. The only time that I have water in my bed is if I pressure wash the tailgate, water flies in under the weather strip, but it's a pressure washer versus a strip of rubber, what do you expect?
The weather strip on the rear of the tonneau is my biggest gripe. For some reason, Fold-A-Cover decided to use an adhesive strip to mount the rubber on the cover. From day one, the strip started coming off at the ends. I have used PVC cement, super glue, and contact cement, but nothing will make a good bond. I ended up using small screws, which worksvery well.
Other than that, I recommend the G4 elite to anyone. It's a great looking product, the locking mechanism is as good as you'll get for a tonneau cover, and it has its own tailgate lock.

Seems like a nice product but these guys are crazy 7-8 hundred bucks for these things. I don't get it there must be a tremendous mark up on all these accessories.

 

Can you elaborate on how the installation has been simplified? I am looking at the install instructions from your website for tacoma which looks to be dated 2008. Is that the simplified version? I am about to pull the trigger on one of these and just making sure I know what I am getting into as far as installation.
Also, If I wanted to remove the entire thing at some future time is the adhesive removable?

 

so this is already incorporated in the current G4 being sold now or is this something planned for the future. If I go online and buy one today will it have the new installation refinements?

 

So are the new mechanical rails able to be purchased by people that already own your cover or is it not interoperable with old versions?

I'm torn between this cover and the Truxedo Lo Pro (or Truxedo Deuce) that my local off road specialist recommended. I've got a trip coming up at the end of the month, so I have to make a decision soon.

 

I emailed Steffens Enterprises and was told that the new instructions were on their website, but the pdf on there seemed to be the old version. I sent that pdf back to them Monday to confirm it was the latest but I have not received a reply.
Anyway, I went ahead and ordered the G4 Elite from them and will post the instructions when it arrives.

 

I agree BIG time with u on this, I purchased mine used from a member and I did not get some of the clamps, I call steffens and they told me the same thing, I about fell out so my G4 has been sitting in my garage for about 2 yrs, I know people & companies need to make money but they are just shafting people and breaking it off in us...i will never buy anyth nj ing from this company, I already talked 3 of my friends into buying another brand.
