Don't forget to clean your MAF

I installed a TRD CAI back in November and saw an immediate and significant drop in my gas mileage from ~20mpg to ~15mpg. I thought that it may take some time to calibrate the new intake and that this might have been the cause of the poor fuel efficiency. But tank after tank, it never seemed to improve. After doing some research, I kept coming across the direct correlation of poor efficiency and a dirty MAF. Sooo, on tuesday I removed the MAF and came to the realization that it was completely covered in an oily soot (possibly the result of an overly oiled CAI filter). I sprayed some electronics cleaner on the sensor, left the battery unplugged for about 30 minutes, and connected everything back up. Since doing this, I've noticed a huuuuuge improvement in my gas mileage and think I may even be back to the pre-intake levels.

If you've noticed poor fuel efficiency, and haven't changed your driving habits, I highly recommend checking and cleaning the sensor. Just a thought...

 

Yep, plently of us do it. There's a few write up's on how to do it. I typicalled make it part of my oil change process. Clean it every change.

Seems no matter what I do I always get 18 mpg. Cleaned maf, throttle body, changed ALL lubes, new plugs, new filter. Before and after have always made no difference, got the truck with 40 k and its always been the same now at 60 k

 

That's the EPA average so you must be doing something right.

Saw this thread and realized I have never cleaned this. I have always run stock filters, have 86k, and get 20-23mpg regularly. Cleaned throttle body at 78k and way pretty clean.

Just wanted some opinions before I do this, is it worth doing? I am a if it ain't broke don't fix it kinda guy

 

Have you changed the diff oil? If not it might be sludgy and that'll suck mpgs from you.
