2012 technical questions

i just sold my 1998 and i already have questions about a 2012 truck i havent got yet lol . whats the deal with the tire pressure monitors can they be eliminated and keep the one on the spare to keep the light off or does it know about all five of them , also i read about swapping out the wiper stalk and purchasing a delay stalk . i also found out the base tacomas will come with standard tail lights not leds . anyone with insight on any of these questions please feel free to send me a message

 

My 2012 has a delay stalk, if you mean an intermittent wiper switch.

I don't think you can delete the TPMS. The system can see all 5 sensors. You can however remove the gauge cluster, disassemble it and remove the light or cover it.

As far as the LED's in the tails, I'm not sure.

 

I'm going to remove the TPMS on mine, if I had CTIS it would be a different story. I'm not down with all the bs electronics that our government is requiring now. My 12 dc offroad w/ manual box is supposed to arrive in 2 weeks, it'll be a short while until I figure the tpms out but I'll post about it. Maybe someone else will post first or already did and i haven't found it?

In case of interest, I noticed that the headlights switch rotates on the outer part of the turn signal stock too, that's dumb so I'm relocating the lights control to on the dash. Also planning to remove or delete any other ecu and memory module connected data inputs beyond fuel delivery. The final other items on my list are to reverse the switches for clutch-in starting and traction control so the default for those things is "off".

 

The TPMS measures relative differences between the tires. It senses when when one goes low of the others. I actually like mine and have had no issues once I understood them. What some have done is to make a chamber out of PVC and throw the senders in the chamber. Mount a valve stem in the end. You pressurize the tank to the same level as the spare and then you retain the spare TPMS. The little tank with the other senders can be put anywhere. Pretty simple and cheap fix if you don't want them in your road wheels.

 

You can also drill and mount all 4 tpms onto the spare.

The Tacoma isn't so bad it's just a small light. My IS350 had a annoying warning on the cluster where it kept telling you the tires were flat. But the sensors saved me once, I ran into a nail and was about to leave for work and saw the warning light. Without it I probably would had drove 30 miles on a flat and not know it until I left the house.

 

Why are you so afraid of the electronics?

 

Instead of ruining the spare get a small tire (like a wheel barrel tire) or make a chamber, throw the sensors inside and air up.

 

Primarily because I plan to keep this thing for 10-20yrs.

The justification is my experience being in the auto industry & software technology, specifically with BMW and Porsche and mobile operating systems. I guess when you're on the inside you see more of the problems associated with short and long term electronics. Seriously, a vehicle is the worst place you can put electronics: outdoors, vibration, rapid and slow process temp fluctuation, humidity & water exposure, not to mention software issues. These + the eventual defects for production shortcomings from the multitude of vendors sourced from, ie solder issues, wiring insulation, glues, etc. are enough to give me concern over this stuff.

 

Thats why you are afraid of computers failing

For what its worth, In 8 years as a Toyota tech I only installed 1 ecu. And that was on a LEXUS lol.

 

After you hack it up let us know how the warranty works for you if you have a problem.

Besides didn't you see it on the news the world is going to end on Dec 21st anyway.

 

Sounds a little (actually a lot) paranoid to me? Sounds like you need a new friend like a psychologist?

Why not buy an older taco and do a complete rebuild? Sounds cheaper to me? Strip it to the frame and get it galvanized. Put in what ever motor you want?

 

FWIW, isn't it possible to drop the tire pressures real low, then accomplish a reset of the monitor system, bring the tires back to normal pressure, and not get a light until the new minimum pressure is reached?

Maybe you're cool, but I don't know you.

Since you don't know... 14hrs of rewire I can do myself + $32k on a taco (only counting 50% depreciation) is less time consuming and less costly than a used purchase, frame off, diesel transplant, machining, brand new parts on everything, paint, and more, that I'd have to send out to get an equivalent condition vehicle as I'd want, then deal with CA smog. Yeah that makes sense, glad you asked.

Most Japanese vehicles have had the headlight switch on the turn signal stalk since at least the 1980s. If you came from American or Europeans cars, it may seem unusual.

Good luck with that. You are pretty much guaranteed to have problems. Toyota electronics are actually reliable and should not be compared to Audi- or BMW electronics.

 

I think the lowest you could go is 25% of the set inflation pressure...or around 24psi if your running 32psi. Any lower than that will set off the light. At least that's how I read this...

^ The set inflation pressure is set by you. i.e. You can inflate your tires to 40 psi, hold the button below the dash to reset the system, and the light should come on at 30 psi.
