ported or sealed for a 2nd gen double cab

I was speaking to someone on building a box for a double cab truck who started out was going to do a couple of speakers with the correct space / tuning in a double cab home made box, but was told by other enthusiast that with the notch in the box for the rear seat bracket, and the big channel on the back of the box to clear the back wall truck bracing, that a ported box would not work well due to the weird channels and walls this created inside the box. So it was suggest to maybe do 1 more sub and go sealed.

What is your all's opinion on this? He and I just had the thought that it did not matter what shape the box is or what it looks like inside as long as the internal volume and port tuning was correct?

Would it be best to do 3 speakers sealed.....or just 2 and port?

 

What subs were you going to use for the ported version? Most I looked at needed 1.5^3 or so per sub. I wanted to go ported and ended up with 2 10's sealed. I like the way it sounds but want to try a single 12 in a ported box with more power pushing it.

I'd go sealed for sure, they are cleaner. Ported do have their benefits but I cant imagine getting enough airspace for more than one sub if you go ported anyway. Just my opinoin

 

i find the crispness you can get from a sealed better, you cant get the low end as much, but i also do not like the distortion that come from a ported box that is not tuned correctly

 

Remove the bracing. It serves no purpose other than to spread the load for the child seat anchors. I had multiple welds that didnt even go through. Its so flimsy you can bend it in half with your bare hands... twice if you are strong. Its a lot of wasted airspace.

Looks like you were wise and went with a box that wont allow seat folding. Dont fuck it up by leaving that brace and not being able to cover that part of the rear wall with vibration dampener.

For subs... I have 2 sealed 10s. Im not big on bass louder than mids and highs for stuff like rap... if you are go 12" and go ported... even a single ported 12" will stomp 2 sealed 10" subs.

 

Sealed can go lower than ported... depends on box size. Big box = lower bass but less efficient.

 

this box is for 8's. The brace will be staying on the back wall because a child will be in the future and I cant say music will take that place.

 

yes but were not talking about a pass through box here, were talking about a small myabe 3 cubic foot box i ve done my fair share of big boxes

 

Its gonna be a bitch to utilize the child restraint hooks with the box back there. You will have to make some clearance for them and be able to move the box forward to get the child seat hooks. I cant imagine having that much spare space that you will be able to move the box.

I used (2)shallow mount 12's because I had them, 10's would have been better since mine are a little starved for airspace. I had to eliminate two of the restraints and bolted the box to the back wall using the holes for the plastic tray so it would be solid. Dynamatted the wall first of course. This left me with one restraint hook, works good, I only have one kid. If you have more than one then, well, I guess pick your favorite

 

if you have the cash.....you can fit a JL 13W5 (the 13.5 inch pancake sub) behind the back seats of the the double cab and still keep a lot of storage room.

on the subject of ported vs not, I talked with my audio shop for a while about what to do with mine. the general consensus was go with ported box behind the seats or the sealed pancake. I went with the pancake for storage room and have not regretted it

 

Larger boxes are more efficient not less and a properly built ported box will sound just as good as a sealed

 

yeah the child restraints are covered up...but when that time comes the box will probably come out or be modified in some way to take advantage of that. it will still be a little while.

 

go ported man, make the box all the way to each end and have the port firing up

 

Where are you planning on putting the port? 2 subs on the 60 side and port on the 40 side? Which way are you planning on facing the port?

 

its not now...its gonna be sealed and 3 subs....it was gonna be 2 on the 60 side and the port on the 40 side

You can do 2 8's in a ported box on just the passenger side and that would leave you the whole drivers side bin and child restraint.
