Bug sheild

I need your help deciding to put on a sheild yes or no . the pros and the cons of having a bug sheild.

 

con: it deflects rocks into your windshield

 

heres my truck with it, I went with it because I have gotten rocks kicked up at the hood so figured I'd protect it a little. Con is these things suffer from sun rot after a few years and break easily.

 

i want one... i seem to be getting friggin paint chips right on the edge of the hood. so i want one not so much for bugs as rocks and what not. but id say yes. go for it. i dont really see a downside. if you think youll like it then DO IT!

 

yea but luckily my insurance replaces my windshields fo freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

 

It keeps the leading edge of your hood free of rock chips. I vote get one!!

 

I think they are useful in that they deflect rocks and other road debris but also they can help direct rain and snow away from your windshield, if the one you get has an upward facing lip.

The oneI had on my 1st gen lasted about 9 years and although it faded it never cracked or chipped. Just buy a good quality one

 

I've had them and they only hold dirt and moisture. I'll carry my touch up paint if chips ever happen.

 

Maybe sun rot depends on the brand/materials? My dad bought a used truck in 1996 or 1997 with a bug shield already on it. Same bug shield is still on it, and it's in decent condition.

Seems like you should have less sandblasting with a bug shield, as sand would be directed up away from the windshield. Just put mine on, waiting to see what happens

 

there are its pros and its cons. I like it because it deflects rocks and bugs but yet, prolong use of the deflector will cause the paint on the hood to chip (where the deflector holds on to the hood). Then at this point, you might just well leave it on cause you can really see it.

 

If you get one go with the type that attaches under the hood...not the OEM one that uses metal brakets that slide over the paint. The Toyota deflector will cause damage!!

 

Bug shield was/is a bad name for these. They do not help to do anything with bugs. The only practical thing they do is keep rocks that fly up at the truck for chipping the paint on the front of the hood. Just look at some cars/trucks with a lot of road miles and you will see chipping on the front 4-6 inches of the hood.

Other than looking good IMO thats all they do.

 

BS. I had one that I installed myself on a 06 and as of the fall of 2011 it was perfectly fine. It just depends on who and how it was installed. My metal bracket never hurt the paint.

 

I got one that attaches like this from Cabela's...might be made by Lund.

 

Well...mine was installed by the dealer with the tape under the brackets...had to get the paint repaired after 2 years. I drive alot on dirt/gravel roads...maybe that caused the metal brakets to wear through the tape faster? Anyway, there's been ALOT of documented cases here that had the same results as I did with the OEM hood shield. If you were happy with it that's great...
