The reason I have never got a scanner is, if your scanner can read them, that means they can already get their radar on you.

I looked them up. I think that you need to get a trunk mount system. This is the latest and greatest that most police departments are moving towards.

I think it all depends on where you live. Some states & or county's do not allow them. You have to check your local laws.

First you need to find out if it legal in your area to have it in your truck or car. Then you need to find out what your local PD and FD departments use VHF, UHF, Trunked, digital, EDACS the list gose on.

    2 completely different ball games

scanners let you listen to emergency channels over the air...but not talk...radar detectors let you know when a cop has clocked your speed

First off as to whether they are legal depends on your state laws.

As to effectiveness, in my opinion there is one detector, the Escort 9500 ix that blows all of the others away. It even uses GPS to notify the driver of speed and traffic light cameras. You can update false positives so that they stop happening.
I am not advertising but I sure sound like it. This is supposed to be a pretty awesome device though.

I recommend you start reading the WIKI and FAQ there. And if you have other questions feel free to join the forums.

Since I'm in SoCal many of the departments have gone to digital and that usually also means trunking. I have a digital trunking scanner and have long since retired my analog scanner.

FYI the Cops also use cell phones if they don't want their conversations
to be heard by the bad guys.

in kentucky radar detectors are legal, but pretty much worthless because almost every department is now using laser.

scanners are a big no-no in your vehicle. the only place you can have them is in your house. its even illegal for you to be walking around with one.

So let me see. Kentucky can't have scanners, but you can have the cool guns.

Us in California can have scanners, but we can't have the cool guns. :(

I think that this thread got stuck on if its legal or not.. The thread was made to find a good scanner for our trucks. Anyone want to get back to that?
