Damn, that horrible OP. I would try using a gear oil suction pump, like the ones they sell at most auto stores, and suck out all the oil you put into the diff. That might let the piece of plastic settle to the bottom of the diff. Then you could "fish" it out using a coat hanger or some other home made tool with a little hook on the end, kinda like unlocking a locked car with a coat hanger technique...

Might be a long shot, and I have no idea if this would work. Good luck!

Do you have one of these? Maybe try and feel around for it and grab it?

Before doing so, I'm not sure how sensitive the gears are, I would think it would be okay to feel around, but I'm no expert.

Mechanical fingers and a flashlight. Pull the drain plug for different access point, what you got to lose?

This is a good idea...just drain out the oil and and the plastic should be on the bottom. If you have already moved the tires by towing it or moving the truck in any way, then its probably caught in the gears by now though.

Haven't moved the tires at all, but when I drained it didn't sink to to bottom, poked all around in there with an abortomatic 100 (coat hanger) and couldn't feel it.

Now you chime in, I have been Google-ing everything trying to figure out what that was called: grasping pliers, snake pliers, hose grabber, and anything else you can think of, finally found it under snake claw VVVV

If there is one good thing about this... I learn an important lesson for next time. Hope someone thinks about this thread before the try to fill a diff, or anything else, with a syringe and tube.

What the hell is it with you Canadians and basic maintenance?

You managed to burn down our White House. You can shake oil of sand and power the free world.

But give u a drain bucket and a maintenance schedule.......

My solution is duct tape and WD-40. In some way, shape, or form we can figure out a way to get that tube out with those two amazing items.

I wouldn't burn more than two hours trying to fish it out. You can pull the third, grab the plastic, and replace it in a single saturday even if you work slowly consulting the manual and write-ups on the various web forums. Here's one writeup:

    http://www.atarmor.com/3rdmemwriteup/writeup2.htm

Personally, I didn't go to the trouble to disconnect the parking brake cable - so that meant I could only pull the axle out about a foot - but that's far enough to remove the third member.

Various reports have it that you can pull the axle out without disconnecting the metal brake line, as long as you physically unhook it from all its mounting brackets. If you do that, you won't need to bleed the brakes.

A first timer working slowly and meticulously will take longer than that. Ask me how I know. :D

I think I dropped a cap from gear oil bottle into my diff years ago. Never saw it again, or fragments. Never found it when I pulled my diff. I'd have trouble believe it found its way past the baffles into the axle tube but maybe. Or I never dropped it in there. Or it was shredded so finely I didn't see it in the oil.

Meh... I'd run it but the proper thing to do would be to pull the diff and try and find it.

Theres several really great writeups available now to show you how to do it. Piece of cake.
