Audiophile's Opinions on Subs?

Looking to get 2 10" subs and 400+ watt amp for my 02 double cab. Just curious what you fellow's opinions are on sub brands. I'm not brand loyal, so if some off the wall or non-well known brand is good please post it.

Also if anyone has box suggestions feel free to share. All opinions and recommendations greatly appreciated.

 

Going get alot of shit for this... going to need to know what you will be mainly listening to and how do you want them to do.

With proper power any name brand sub will perform very well, all that said i havent hd any problems with my Rockford Fosgate subs and even blew one and rf replaced both as the had a newer model out and got me a matching set

 

thats pretty awesome they just replaced it free.

I listen to 3 genre's usually. Rock, Rap, and Country. Sometimes dubstep but thats rare.

 

You want loud or clear bass? Moving lots of air is fun, and turns heads but clear precise hits are nice to.

 

is there a happy medium?

 

Probably... havent heard enough different brands to help much past this point. JL makes a great sounding product tho and would prolly be considered both a high sq(sound quality) sub and have great sl(sound level)

 

I've been looking into JL's lately. I won't buy Kicker Comp's again nor audiobahn....not a big fan.

But seriously, a Dayton HO 10 would be nice and I think they fit just fine. My thought would be to do one of those ported on about 500watts. As long as the box design is decent it should sound very nice.

I was reading your requirements and about to post this as well.

 

How deep are these? We only have about 4" max mounting depth in out 1st gens for behind the rear seats unlike the 5-6 in the 2nd gens.

I have 2 Polk Audio MM840's behind the rear seats of my '01 DC they are nice and hit real tight puncy bass and are great for rock and country but when listening to rap music with really low notes they get muddy and can't hit hard with it. Think around 40Hz and down they drop hard and fast, but would still suit most listeners.

They are too deep if he is wanting them behind the seats. Specs can be found on the Partsexpress.com site.

With limited space (though I do not know your airspace), I would probably go with a Type R thin.

With that said, if he is running 10" drivers, will these go behind the seat, or some other spot?

As to the polk drivers - 40hz should be about perfect in a truck, cabin gain should take over for solid bass. If they are getting muddy switch to a better driver.

Also of note, an "optimal" box for those is well over 1 cubic ft. That box gives you about .3 cubes (after displacement). A JBL GTO is a better suited driver for that box, and has a better motor to boot...

The MM is probably louder in a box twice the size that you have, however.

 

I bought the MM's based off of crutchfields info for air space one them other than the displacement of the sub itself the air of that box is right in line with the air needed for the sub. If you play something like "Put On" by Jeezy it'll sound terrible. Right now I'm thinking of doing 2 JL Audio W3's in a box on my seat but will still allow 2 passengers you can see that here. I would think that you could build something back there with 2 type-R thins there is certainly the air space for it because the box I have you could build on just like it and move the sub hole over and put a 10 in it.

 

I dont doubt that was the recommended size, but most commercial music does not have much info below 40hz. Run the sub through a modeling program and you will see that the specs provided show a large box is needed.

MFG's rate their subs for smaller boxes because that is what people want. They also know that cabin gain in a vehicle will allow a sub that starts to roll off around 50-60hz the ability to play "flat" down into the 30hz range. This is very common for most mfg's, and many use this to their advantage.

 

I have a Rockford Fosgate T0 12in in a ported box and I love it. It's being powered by a Hifonics 1000.1 amplifier. With 4GA wiring. I'm only pushing 750 watts to it and it maxes out at 1400watts so I shouldn't be blowing my sub anytime soon. Rockford Fosgate is a more expensive brand but it is damn good quality. Throw a RF sub in a sealed enclosure and I bet you will be happy.
