Mounting locations for subs in a DC - Audio Noob

I was working on some misc stuff around my Tacoma today and got around to thinking about the sound system I want to put into the truck. I have seen all the different enclosure options (I think) for my DC and was wondering.....has anyone ever mounted subs in the doors? Anybody got pics of the rear doors with the interior skins removed?

I'm sure there are reasons why I haven't seen it yet, and I was hoping to get some insights. Fire away audiophiles! Thanks!

 

Yes, it can be done. No, its generally not worth the effort.

You would need to build an enclosure inside the door. This generally means small box subs, but the same subs will fit under or behind the seats.

Then you need to reinforce the door. That thin metal is not ideal.

Potential of door hinge problems in the future, adding 15-20lbs of material to it.

modifying door for a decent grill

etc.

If you are just wanting LARGE midbass to handle some lower frequencies, you can squeeze an 8" up front. Maybe run another pair in the back for reinforcement?

 

Matt - Great response. I was thinking mounting depth would be an issue, but didn't even consider the added weight or the fact that you'd have to build an in-door enclosure. I would be willing to go with 10's in the doors where it could be integrated somewhat seamlessly into the cabin, but if I'm going with an enclosure, I'll be doing a good 12.

Would love to see pics of subs mounted in our 2nd gens that are not in the traditional location.....Anybody got em, please don't hesitate to show em off. Mahalo once again gang.

Warhorse - Good post. I saw that install. Very cool. I'm hoping to retain as much of the factory storage as possible, but will forego what I need to to get the system installed. This may be an option. Thank you for going outta your way to reference the thread.

 

What kind of budget are you looking at? What are your main goals in the build? Maybe we can help you figure something out here.

 

why not the box behind the rear seats? There's plenty of storage under the seats that you'll still have. I have a box behind my back seats

 

Yeah, that's what the initial plan was/is.....figured I'd better do some diligence about other mounting options just incase. I like the storage back there, but I guess it's gonna have to go.

 

Always an option to only use one side. You can buy a driver side only box, or a double box and cut off the driver side area, giving you the amp mounting spot and the sub box on the passenger side, leaving your driver side storage available.

Both significantly easier, though not as interesting, as the underseat option.

 

MR MARV can make you any box to fit your needs and is an expert when it comes to anything audio...

Very interesting. I know you can put the ports inside or outside the box, I just never seen anyone do it before. Good idea!

 

good thread. i was looking into some mounting locations in the double cab as well...i would love to have an 8 w7 in a custom enclosure right behind the center console.

 

I gotcha...Unfortunately, I think thats your best bet. If you put them in doors, I think you're going to hear a lot more rattling. Here is my box installed (from way back in the day before I joined TW)

Instead of making a false back as the port i used pvc pipe, goes into the box around 12" used the black couplers to better secure the pvc better
