OFFICIAL 2nd gen 4x4 front differential bearing vibration thread

Ordered parts and removal tool yesterday, and UPS showing delivery tomorrow. Probably do this on Friday. Looked at the work, might take an hour. Let me know if ya still need a hand.

 

Toytec's products up to 3" in the front does not void the factory toyota warranty. Anything over three does. My dealer assured me that it would not before I bought my truck last year. As to fixing it, the new diff and cv will not permanently fix the growl, they said if it started again to bring it back and they would do it again. ECGS told me they sent 100 bushings to Toyota for testing so maybe Toyota will have a TSB or recall in the future. Bryan Easler Toyota in Hendersonville, NC is a great dealership. My family has bought 12 toyotas from them over the years, have no complaints with the service manager.

 

Ahh the fact your family has a great relationship with them might explain why you got such great service. I may try again with the stock tires when I go for free 10k service. That would be SWEEET if toyota would do the bushing swap under warranty. Wishfull thinking but if Toyota requested 100 bushings that's very positive news!! Thanks for the update

 

I hope their recall will not include replacing bearing with bushing ..... If Toyota had put 4 pinion diff that would not have been a issue in the first place, or at least machined carrier so side gears sit correctly.

 

hi all. i'm new to this forum but have been following it since i've had my vibes for about 1.5 years since lifting my truck 2.5". Trucks in the dealership this morning getting the front diff swapped out under warranty (along with my clutch release bearing). I ordered the bushing and tool yesterday and will put it in when i get my truck back from the dealership. Just wondering, where are the written instructions for the fix? I saw the video but am unclear on the process of how to pull out the cv axle out and what has to come apart. Can anyone post or direct me to some instructions? thanks

Had the dealer look at the play my stub axle has, they wanted $260 to take apart the axle and diagnose the issue...I have a few granite induced "beauty" marks on the underside of my truck, which they said must have caused the play. Forget that, I just ordered my bushing and tool tonight, looking forward to installing it and getting rid of the play and vibes

 

So, unbolt the brake caliper, remove the rotor, unbolt the upper ball joint and the steering tie rod and the bottom two bolts that hold the lower suspenion arm to the knuckle?

 

I have off on Friday I can meet u and we can do both

 

thats what i'm thinking but i'm not 100% sure. can anyone confirm? i think you can leave the shock bolted on

 

^ you have to take the shock bolt out, But you can leave the UCA bolt in, But you have to take out the 2 bolts that hold the LCA to the Spindle, as well as everthing else. Then you will be able to pry the axle out and then swing it out of the way to do the swap...

But of course this is only if your axle is still in good shape and can be re-used.

i left the bottom shock bolt in... if your pulling everything off (spindle Still attached to the axle) id recommend a helper to install the axle again..

 

I believe fastest way and how we do it.
1. Remove Wheel
2. Remove Dust cap to access CV nut
3. Remove Cotter pin and CV nut
4. Remove 2 Lower Bolts that Hold Spindle to LCA
5. With Spindle Loose Pull out and away from CV shaft, CV shaft is now only connect to diff, Take Bungy cord and secure Spindle with rotor caliper ect. out of the way towards the front of the vehicle
6. Take a punch or screw driver, Place it on metal portion of CV shaft and Wack it with hammer to release it from diff. (You can use a pry bar to pop it out but it will bend dust cover)

if you feel like above method does not allow enough movement of spindle assembly remove the tierod nut and tierod also.

Just replaced my bearing with bushing and replaced my cv axle. And replaced another bushing on another truck in 5 hours two people. And I have to say chase this is amazing there is no play and rides smooth as butter. Tool worked great for removal. Once again can't thank you enough now I don't want to drive my truck into a river.
