Vibration MEGA THREAD!!!!!!

So it seems there are more and more threads on vibration problems so I did a search for everybody to go through and posted the link below, thought it would be helpful to put this out there. If you have a take off shudder or a speed related vibration especially around 20-30 mph this thread is for you.

good luck (my advice, jump to step 10)

1. first your going to go in and the dealership will tell you its normal



2. then your going go back and say its not, they will look at it.. test drive it and tell you they cant feel the vibration



3. you will drive for several more days as the vibration gnaws at the core of your very soul.



4. you will go back, again and now their "master tech" will say, "o yeah its a problem but, we call it a characteristic of the vehicle".. again you will leave



5. a couple days and 4000k shudders later you will escalate it to Toyota customer service in a rage-frustration fit....



6. then you will go back toyota and the dealership will "drop your axel and put you in 4hi" to confirm its the rear driveshaft, then they will promptly replace your rear driveshaft



7. you will leave happy...



thinking problem gone
but its not.....



9. you will go back and toyota will send out a 50 man team of "engineers" out that will do nothing more then spend days with your truck scratching their head....



10. you will inevitably get frustrated and give up after spending the equivalent of 10 days of your time and skipping out early on work several times to "drop the truck off", learning to deal with the vibration/shudder.




OR (Secret step 11) Design you own Custom solid 1 piece drive shaft with a CV joint (sorry prerunners) from a 1999 4runner and call it a day.

Why do you say "Sorry Prerunners"? Prerunners can't utilize a one piece drive shaft???

 

I am guessing that since we dont have a x-case, our drive shafts are too long to use a 1 piece? Hence the need for a carrier bearing.....

but in all seriousness it is too long sans transfer case

the option for prerunners is to add a CV joint at the front of the 2nd axle.....


but....

this will cost you nearly the amount of a solid 1 piece drive shaft, so you might as well buy that instead.... but we cant use it, DAMMNIT! so this option becomes way to much $$$ for what you get.


so just get yourself some M10 bolts, a stack of washers and figure out the exact drop for your carrier bearing. (don't drink and drive while making test runs)

+1 CHEAPNESS!

 

So anybody out there measure there t-case mount yet? Maybe over the weekend we could get some measurements posted up to compare the rear height if you don't know what I am talking about read the second link in the first post.

 

im a prerunner, so im sure its different but out of the million times i've been under the truck i always keep coming back to i need to RAISE my transmission to drop the angle at the 2nd driveshaft.. but i never thought about the shudder coming from the 1st.. BACK TO THE ANGLE FINDER BATMAN!

 

So the pre-runner has a CB and without the t-case it is a slip yoke into the transmission?

 

Maybe mine is a different issue. But with 100 miles on my Tacoma DCLB When I get in it a start going down the road I get a lot of steering wheel wobble/vibration. It will fade out some as I drive. And as I get about 7 miles on them the vibratoin is minimal. But still there slightly.
I'm hearing a lot of issues on this site on vibration. But for mine i am suspecting the roundness of the tires. Or a balancing issue. And I really hope that is all it is. Seems like the colder the tires are the more they vibrate, And as they warm up the vibration just about goes away.
Anybody eliminate their issue by concentrating on the tires?

 

if you pay attention its easy to tell the difference. yours is def tire related. ours you can feel in the body/rear.. not in the wheel
