    That's what's killing you.

My morning commute is 45 miles at 60-70.
My afternoon commute is at 20-45.
    I average 24.5-26.

On a trip to Texas I was looking forward to some great highway mileage.
Problem is, AZ limit is 75. New Mexico and Texas limit is 80.
I got 22 on that trip.

Anything over 65 is going to absolutely hammer your mileage in a pickup.
My Duramax was an 8000lb 4x4 and it got 18+ at 65, 15 at 75.

I have a 4x4 with a 3" lift and I get 19.5 to 20.5 MPG with winter gas & 23.5 to 24.5 MPG with summer gas. 280 to 350 mile/week commute (depends on 4 or 5 day week) starting at home elevation of 4450' climbing to 4550' then down to 4100' at work with a lot of up and down along the way. 2 miles to freeway then 70 mph for 5 miles, 75 mph for 25 miles and 2 more miles to work. This is my 4th 4Banger Toy and I've found you get better MPGs by shifting between 3K and 3.5K RPMs. On my last tank of gas I got 429.2 miles on a tank. It took 20.851 gallons to refill (20.584 mpg).

A bunch a cool stickers, a bada ass MetalMiller Tx Longhorns grill emblem painted Hemi Orange, JBA long tube headers with o2 sims, Diff breather mod, Red LED interior lights, Fancy head unit that plays ipod n movies, Also DIY install factory stuff like, factory cruise control, factory intermittent wipers, OME nitro struts with 886x springs and toy tec top plate, JBA high caster UCA's for better alignmnet and dey beefier too, Old Man Emu Dakar leaf springs in da rear with the gear, U bolt flipper, Ivan Stewart TRD rims with 33" K Bro 2's, some bad ass weather tech floor liners so I don't muck up my interior, an ATO shackle flipper for mo travel in da rear wit the gear, also super shiny Fox 2.0 shocks back there too, all sorts of steal armor for bouncing off of the rocks like demello sliders, AP front skid, trans skid, n transfer skid, demello gas tank skid, and a tough as nails ARB bumper with warn 8k winch, I'm sure there's more
Use your cruise control to drive the speed limit, keep your tires to the proper inflation, keep your truck well maintained, don't carry around any extra weight, avoid racing to the next stop light or stop sign, and avoid letting your gas fall below a quarter of a tank and you will squeeze out as much economy as your truck will give you. My personal best on mine has been 24.3mpg, and that has been within the past month.

I hate to say it OP, but 17-18 puts you right smack in the middle of the 16/20 EPA estimate. Dropping freeway speed to 70 will help for sure. And air up those tires more.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Get a 4 banger! I regularly get 20-24 and I ain't complaining, thats good for a truck. In reality a truck is just about as aerodynamic as a brick, they are heavy, have more rugged drive train components and what not, heavier tires and wheels to turn. Expecting one to be like a hybrid is pretty ignorant. What I plan to do in the future is get a Jetta TDI for mileage purposes, they are capable of getting 50mpg if driven nicely.

2.7L AC is obviously going to get better mileage than the 4.0L DC the OP has

I agree with this. Had mine for 2 tank-fulls now and have gained about 1.5 MPG by having the instant MPG gauge showing. It really helps show you how throttle input and gear selecting affects your mileage. It's addicting.

    Thank you Captain Obvious.

I was comparing mine to the 2.7 5lug that I quoted.

245/75R16 passenger tires and a mellow right foot are the only "mods" that are worth the cost. After that it would be stripping seats, airbags, rear bumper, tow package and whatever else you can tear out to make it lighter. Haha.

Oh and remove the spare tire. Haha

That would be under extreme and not cost worthy haha. I imagine 215's wouldnt fit on the stock rims. Not positive though.

But it would be unique. It's all about trying to be different here with the same truck.
