The whole stretch where I was above 22 mpg and hit 25 twice was on Canadian Highways 11 and 17 from Thunder Bay, Ontario down to Sault Saint Marie and then over to Ottawa and then US Highways 11 and 2 through northern NY, Vermont, and New Hampshire. Basically all 2 lane roads with 55 mph speed limits and no mountain passes. Through these sections I never got above 65 mph and averaged about 58 mph and made very few stops because it was raining for 3 days straight.

I do have an Excel file with the numbers but I don't see a way to attach them to a TW PM. If you PM me an email address I'll send them out. I also have a set of numbers for my Colorado trip this Christmas so I'll send them as well.

Looks like Canada has engineered a great streach of road getting that mpg!....California take note!..Our brothers to the north are on to something!

I got close to 25 myself coming down out of mountains from New Mexico to Texas. I was running around 80 the whole time, but it is predominantly downhill. Higher octane fuel yields better mileage for me... I get what is typical of the V6 4X4. Love my truck. :D

Most of you live in the flats (LA, Florida, SC ...). Try running in the mountains consistently. My house to the ski hill is 16 miles and 4000' gain. I have been tracking for a little while and I am averaging 15 mpg with a 2009 Quad cab, 6sp manual, V6. I am using 10% ethanol year a round, so that is probably hurting things. Elevations starting at 3000' probably also hurt things. I also looked up the stock tires, BF Goodrich - Rugged Trail T/A - 265/70R16 on Consumer Reports. These tires do not report very well for on road use, braking, braking on ice etc. These tires also have just average rolling friction numbers.

I am wondering if anyone has compared their mileage before and after tire changes?

Also has anyone actually improved their gas mileage by paying attention to something like the ScanGauge II?

Ive made the following minor mods: designed and built a front air dam, made an exhaust heat shield for under the air intake hose (cooler intake air makes more power/efficiency), wrapped the air intake hose with heat resistant material, added an oil vapor catch can, put a tire cover on the spare tire under the bed, shortened the exhaust with a Summit Racing 2.5 flow through muffler (S route, not straight) and dumped the tail pipe just over the axel.
Ive done nothing to the engine, ECU or drive train. I have the Toyota 17 inch mags with Firestone Destination LE3 265/65R17 tires at 30 psi.
My wife and I live in Lawrenceville, GA and just returned from a 3 night trip to Charleston, SC, driving over 700 miles of Interstate, State Roads and around Charleston.
I check my mileage via mathematics (miles ÷ fuel used) and via a Bluetooth app that sends info to my phone. The 18.97 mpg was from around town. The 25+ was from the highway.
I will let the pictures do the talking from here.

Old thread, but.... I bought my 2007 new. It's a 4x4 TRD Off-Road Double cab. I upsized the tires to 265/75/16 with a mildly aggressive AT tire when the factory tires wore out. While I don't have detailed records, over the 256,000 miles I've owned it my fuel mileage has been pretty similar.

I made several cross-country trips with it and did keep up with my fuel mileage similar to the OP. The 2016 the trip from GA to the Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce Canyon was the last long trip for it. Since then, it's been a 3rd vehicle and driven closer to home. For most of my normal everyday driving I'm somewhere between 17-18 mpg. On road trips it's pretty much right at 20 mpg overall. Some tanks a little better, some a little worse depending on the road and how fast I drive.

I've always gotten the best fuel mileage in mountains. Yes, I burn a little more fuel going up, but then I can coast down the other side and part way up the next hill. You can't get up a lot of speed in those conditions. The best I've ever done was just about 23 mpg and that was between the Grand Canyon and Zion. It was 2 lane roads with lots of hills and around 55 was as fast as it was practical to drive.

The worst I ever got on the road was on the same trip on the way home. Between Denver and Kansas City I was driving into a steady headwind and got 16 mpg. I averaged almost exactly 20 mpg for the trip.

I've gotten some crazy good fuel mileage in my F150 on some mountain stretches. There are places where you can drive 150-200 miles and gradually lose 5000' of elevation. You do a lot of coasting.
