Tipping "Its getting out of control"

I have always been a generous Tipper when it comes to dining but now I feel that there our other business out there taking advantage of the tipping feature on there credit card machines. I feel like they are throwing it on there receipts just to see if people will write in a tip. The most common business I have seen practicing this abuse of tipping are sandwich shops. They make you a sandwich and put it on a tray along with an empty cup and send you on your way. How does that generate the need for me to tip you. They don't deliver my food to my table, They don't keep my cup full of soda, and They don't clear my table when I'm done eating. This last sandwich shop I hit was a Trailer on the side of the road. Strangely enough they use really good quality meats and make some of the best sandwiches in the area but there isn't even a table to sit down and eat at but they are asking for a tip! There have been other random places that I have been that weren't even in the food industry that are asking for tips. I think this is outrageous. I think these credit card machine companies should bare the responsibility of legitimizing the need to ask for tips on a receipt and not allow the end user of the machine to activate the tipping functionality with out first proving that there business/Job description falls under the accepted tipping Practices.

 

Draw a line through the tip space and write down the total at the bottom. No service, no tip. I agree. it is irritating that they ask for a tip but haven't done anything to deserve it.

Idk if It's the company asking for a tip, I think It's the way the receipt prints out. I don't give tips to a little sandwich shop either.

 

Was in a Sacto hotel and when we went to eat breakfast in their restaurant in the lobby, the bill came to a tad over $60. I put down a single $100 bill. When I got the change back, she gave me only $8.

I mentioned that it was a $100 bill and she said, "Oh, I thought you gave me $80." Dahell?? In a single paper bill? Even still, she owed me more than 8 bucks. Took her another 10 mins to give me back the right change, after she was standing at the counter chatting with her co workers. Im guessing she would figure I'd just let it go as her tip.

 

Another baffling example is guided hunting and fishing charters. Do some internet searching a see what you have to pay for a day's fishing charter or a 3 day guided hunting trip at some of the big outfitters.

But somehow out of that price, they evidently don't give much of it to the actual guides or boat mates. Because they will also expect a 10 to 30% tip on top for the guides.

 

I went to smash burger at lunch at their reciepts have a tip line on them too...uhh, no.

 

My dad does a few guided deer hunts in the fall. He doesnt get paid much from the ranch owner, he makes most of the money from the hunter tiping him. But the people going on these hunts are loaded anyways...last year it was all wealthy oil guys that couldnt shoot worth a shit! haha

 

I detest the receipts that generate tipping percentage guidelines at the bottom. The programming includes tax in the calculation! This is pure evil and immoral. Why would I give a server a tip amount based on how much the government takes from me? Retarded scam for the gullible.

 

agreed. The place I work at does this and I get people complaining about it a lot.

I simply tell them I agree haha, I should start carrying a sharpie and crossing that part out.

 

When I go out with my friends I have 3 ways of tipping. 1. the service was awful/poor and I don't tip, plus I'll leave a note and call the manager. (only had to do this once, sadly though I was with my mom and grandma) 2. service was average/normal and tip 5-10 percent. 3. service was outstanding in this area I'll go between 12-16 percent. A thing to look for is if the restaurant adds automatic gratuity. I think either the bill has to be above a certain amount and/or you need certain amount of people in your group.

 

has to be over an 8 top where I work to add gratuity. I don't do it unless it's 12+ people.

edit: and you will be notified if grat was added, unless the server is a douche/retard.

 

i see do see this thread as serving some sort of purpose but "out of control" is not fitting...

if a restaurant has a tip on the receipt then draw a line through it. no need to make a rant thread. who cares?

 

My GF managed a retail shop and she could program the register to include the line for a tip or not. She didn't put it on the receipt for the obvious reason. It's just the manager looking for a little extra.

Had lunch today with the guys from work after training. The receipt already figured in 20% tip (was itemized). We just met the final balance to the penny. Told the hostess we normally tip better than that (and we do) but since they figured it out for us already that was all she was getting.
She looked a little shocked. Oh well.

 

First, I tip cash whenever possible. Friend told me her job doesn't pay her a tip until the credit card company pays, it works it's way back through the system, and then it has to be added to her paycheck, and the amount is reduced because the credit card company charges a percentage of the sale. So tipping via credit card means your server isn't getting the entire tip and wont see it for a month. Meh.

I tip 10-15% for average service. That's $1.00 to $1.50 per person at most of the restaurants I go to. And if the total tip is less than $1 I just leave $1. Outstanding service gets 20% or more. I once tracked down a server from across the restaurant to give him a tip because the girl who introduced herself as my waitress did nothing more than take my drink and dessert orders. No kidding, she didn't even come out to take my dinner order, so I thought the guy who spent an hour doing her job deserved the tip.

Sub shops, lunch deli counters, and Sonic carhops do not get tips. I'm never sure what to do with pizza delivery though. I didn't mind tipping them when there was no delivery fee because most pizza places didn't pay mileage on the kid's vehicle, but since now most pizza places charge me $2-3 for delivery, I figure that covers what I would have paid as a tip for someone delivering it.

I did a 8 day trip down the grand canyon and I tipped the boat men $200 a person. People who do these tours/guides, normally get paid jack shit and are doing it so they can be out doors doing what they love.

Tattoo artists, fuck you I don't tip you shit for $100 an hour. Waiters, I tip really good if I get good service. Lady at the sandwhich shop asking for tips when all she did was take my money, kiss my ass.

 

From what I understand the pizza places don't give any of the delivery fee to the drivers. They use that to help pay the wages of an employee that isn't in the shop helping cook the food. It's crap that I should have to pay his/her hourly wages..but it seems that's the case. Delivery food has gotten out of control price wise as well,at least in my area.

My dad had the issue with an automatically generated tip once. We went out to dinner as a family ( 10 of us I think ) and when he got the bill they'd already added a 15% tip to it. He told the waitress and the manager the same thing ( I tip better than 15% on good service with a big party,but since you already added it in that's what you're getting. ). The waitress was pissed.

 

It is common knowledge (and posted on most restaurant menus) that parties of certain size...usually 8 or more...have an automatic tip, usually 15%. I assume you (and your dad) know why this policy is in place at most establishments...

You dad should know this.

And, if he felt the service was outstanding...he still should have tipped beyond the 15%.

 

Yeah I've never had an issue with large group precalculated tips. I know there are a bunch of dueches out there that try to leave crappy tips in these scenarios and the the restaurant needs to do something to protect there employees. Large tables like that are a lot of extra work to maintain and they still have other tables that the need to take care of just as well. As far as I'm concerned even average service with a large table is worthy of a larger tip.

What I'm more upset about is the businesses that have no right or reason asking for a tip. I just feel that it is shady and shouldn't be allowed.
