Folks who don't tip are cheap asses. And I do mean asses.

Come on, if you can afford a service you can help out the person providing it. BTW, I have never in my life received a tip, but I tip the hell out of people who make my life easier.

I always use plastic for my tips that way the server has to claim it on their taxes. Cash tips often go unreported thus bucking the system and making everyone else pay more. I'm all for being fair, but not at my own expense.

If I have to pay income taxes so do you. :D

I'm stationed in Bahrain currently, everything has a "12% Service Charge". I don't understand it because in the time it takes the guy at the burger place to make my burger I could have killed the cow, ground the beef, cooked it and ate before he brings it out. Its like dealing with zombies that handle money..

    Yeah.
You can just write in something like "Don't piss into the wind" or "Don't look at the sun" and be done with it. I always use plastic, so I just move the decimal point to the left, double that, and make the total a round number. I usually round the change up, so a little more than 20%. I service was a little lacking, I round down. If service sucked I just do 10%, but I never stiff the person.

My stance on "tipping" is that if you are going to do a job then do it to the best of your ability. Quality service in the US shouldn't demand a bribe. I've done a hell of a lot more service for people than to bring them a cup of coffee and a doughnut and have never asked nor received a tip for it.

I stopped eating at places that had servers after a friend got a job as one and told me what her fellow servers would do to get back at customers they were mad at because they didn't feel that they were being tipped enough.

Never leave a tip with your credit card, always do it personally to your server. The server is the person who deserves it, if you leave it with a card they may not actually get what you left.

Yes tipping is out of control in some situations, but an excellent server will always receive 20% or more depending on how great the service was. Service is what keeps people coming back:)

So the guy delivering my pizza is actually receiving a regular hourly wage then. If the pizza guy is already making at least minimum wage, I am under no obligation to tip (although I still might). A tip is supposed to bring an hourly wage for a waiter or other personnel exempt from minimum wage laws up to at least minimum wage. Waiters make $2 an hour because they expect tips, and I don't mind tipping them.

You have to watch servers nowadays as some are as likely as not to steal your credit card information. Remember, if they take your credit card out of your sight they have the number, expiration date and security code, which allows them to order online, even if they don't use a reader to clone it altogether. Just Google "Waitress arrested" and you will get hundreds of examples.

Then there is this, where a couple was arrested for "theft" for not tipping for bad service.

One has to wander too as to the stupidity of the police officers involved.

If a pizza delivery person is making minimum wage, what do you figure they make per hour after burning gas for an hour?

The delivery guy does have to pay for his own gas to deliver to you. You've seen gas prices recently, right?

Tip money from pizza delivery helped me purchase my first truck. A used 1988 22R, man I loved that truck. Then it was stolen :(

Sorry, back on topic. If the person is nice and friendly I tip 15-20%.

There's an easy way to deal with that potential issue. Memorize the security code or record it somewhere safe at home or encrypted on a data device. Then you just scratch off the code from the card since it's not needed for swipe transactions.

The fault lies with the businesses when it comes to tipping, especially the big companies. For their own corporate profits, they are bastardizing an antiquated custom that probably made sense in the 17th century.

So here is my take on it. If go into a Waffle House I know the server is probably struggling just to make a living. So I might even leave $5 or $10 on a $20 order, if they did a great job.

Where I have a problem is when I go a little more expensive, say a steak or seafood place. If there are four people that order full meals, the bill could be $80 -$100 or more. Despite what most of them have been conditioned to believe I do NOT "owe" the server $15-20 for delivering those four meals, just because the restaurant charged me $80 for it.

They might be dressed a little nicer, but they haven't provide any more service than the struggling single mom at the Waffle House did. I view the tip according to the actual amount of work, not cost of the food.

And the more expensive the restaurants get, the worse the server's attitudes about the tip amounts seem to get.
