Alright so I have got one weird problem here my friends and despite having brought this truck to a yota dealership the problem remains and they have no idea what it is.

    Background.
This is my 2nd post to TW, yes I'm pretty much a junior member but I've been following TW, wanting a taco, and doing research on them for the past 2 years. After my deployment to afghansitan I had enough money to get one and with 4 months of searching listings and a deadline to meet, I finally found one sweet taco for a great price. 08 TRD DCLB 4x4 74K miles. not bad.

    Problem
I've had this truck for about mmm 3 maybe 4 weeks now. I started noticing within the past week what feels like a slip in the XMSN.
    Here's how it goes:

Everytime I'm stopped and about to turn right onto a street I give it about half maybe a little more throttle and just as it's about to shift to second gear there's complete loss of power for about 2-3 seconds. Gas petal is still depressed the same amount and after the couple seconds throttle kicks in and engine catches back up to desired speed.
(I'll add that in this brief amount of time no matter how hard you press the gas there is no response from the engine)
This ONLY happens when I am turning right onto a street. If I'm easy on the gas about 1/4 throttle it almost never does it and if it does, very very momentarily (.5 second).
    Attempt to fix:
I took it to toyota and let them keep it all day so they could figure out what was wrong and despite that I drove with one of their mechanics and had it happen while driving they could not duplicate the problem. (sounds like bs to me)
When i left i gave the bitch 3/4 throttle turning right out of the parking lot and sure as shit, she did it again.
They said everything is looking fine and they don't know what's wrong with it.

I can not explain this. Why only right turns? Please help. I can't believe I've been wanting a taco this long, finally got one and joined the club, only to have problems.

    :notsure:Any advice out there?:help:

I would be checking every connection to the pedal and throttle body some thing is loose if the engine does not respond or the trans fluid level if it revs up.

Sounds to me like your driving style is causing the electronic nannies to intervene. Try turning the trction control devices off and see if you can duplicate the condition. At the very least you will have eliminated one culprit.

I've only been driving this truck for about 3 weeks, doesn't it take longer for the truck to adjust to my driving conditions? Also, how do you turn off traction control on a 08 trd sport? Only button I've got is the RSCA and that's only going to effect the rear seat airbags.

Try doing the same tight turn to the left, as you do your right turns. A "typical" left turn is much more sweeping than a "typical" right turn.

I'm fairly certain that the 08's don't have traction control, but I could be wrong. Mine doesn't. Also, the gas pedal uses a redundant system to keep transmitting data even if one of the sensors fail. Somewhere on this forum is a great writeup on how the gas pedal and throttle body interact.

EDIT: Here is the PDF that goes over all of the engine systems. Page 35 of the PDF (EG-112 on the document) talks about how the throttle works.

To the OP did you ever find out what the issue was? My truck just started doing it 2 days ago.

No i never did. It seemed to just kind of go away so i stopped worrying about it. Still does it once in awhile but almost only when it's really hot outside. It's a pretty stupid problem though am I right? I really want to find out whats wrong though. Somebody told me it might be something with the traction control but, i don't even have that lol. My next move was going to be to try and swap out the chip that controls the gas flow. (somebody help me out with terminology here) I think it's called the ECU?

I read part of that PDF above your comment....

    ETCS-i
    (Electronic Throttle Control System-intelligent)
    [See page EG-53]
Optimally controls the opening angle of the throttle valve in accordance with the accelerator pedal input and the engine and vehicle conditions.

Sounds like maybe that's whats faulty. Maybe If i tried swapping that with someone else's that works? I dunno I'm out of ideas here.

Thanks for the info, I read the thread for cleaning the MAF. At first I thought dude this is stupid this isn't going to help me at all but then at the very end I caught sight of this

"While throttle-body cleaning is good preventative maintenance, it should also help engine drivability. In fact, if you've noticed a rough idle, stumbling initial acceleration or even stalling - all when the engine is fully warmed up - a dirty throttle body could be the culprit. Once you look inside a throttle body, you will probably be surprised at the dirt, gum and varnish that have accumulated there over time. "

Alright. Got my attention. Im on it! I will document my findings too with the before and after feel. Thanks man!

Hmmm, this is probably the third time I've heard about this issue...but I can never remember what the fix is.

I remember now. It was a loose battery connection, but that truck was spitting and sputtering on right hand turns.

To me it feels like the governor is kicking in. Because it runs then the throttle completely cuts out then it comes back.

Yeah that's exactly what I felt like was going on too. I thought maybe if there was something wrong with the computer or i dunno but it was stalling for a good 2 seconds.

I did the MAF clean as the link shows above, super easy and rather fun. While I was at it i replaced the filter with a K&N, AND replaced the cabin filter. Happy Truck.
She's running way smoother now and feels noticeably faster...

I haven't noticed the stall happen much lately but my Throttle body WAS dirty. If I get anymore stalls i will update this asap and let you all know. For now, this may have fixed the problem.

    Bad news guys...
I did the throttle body clean and MAF sensor clean. Loved the results especially with my K&N filter but I felt the truck do a couple little stalls recently. Nothing big, maybe like a half to close second stall but I definitely felt it. So the problem still exists! I will continue to hope to find a cure to this truck cancer and will be sure to inform you all once and If i do... until then, :)

You just cleaned the MAF, and put in a K&N. I've heard stories about the oil on the K&N filters messing with our MAF sensors. If it went away for a while and is slowly coming back, it could be the filter getting oil on the MAF Sensor...just a thought.

    Gentleman....I have figured it out.

I have finally, finally figured it out.

First I will tell you what it is that is causing these stalls and then I will tell you why.

Ready for this? Here we go.....

    THE BRAKES

    Wait whaaaaa??

okay so check this out, I was driving yesterday and out of random road boredness I tried to see what it'd be like to drive with two feet. Now I have a VERY sensitive brake pedal, a light press from your pinky will move it about a centimeter worth of play that initiates the brake lights. This sensitivity has caused my cruise control to turn off after hitting some mediocre bumps on the highway and make my brake lights look like a rave concert when Im off-roading.
SO: As i was placing my feet into position while driving with two feet I accidentally pressed the brake just lightly enough to trip the switch. I was driving and all of a sudden * LOSS OF POWER *
    I thought woah what the?
Wait a minute.... I tried pressing on the gas and then pressing on the brake just ever so lightly again. I was speeding up and then there it was again! Loss of power, I'm floating...
    BOOM It clicked.
I repeated this process over and over again about 12 times before i was convinced.
Turns out that when your driving, even if your half way down on the gas, if there is any amount of brake applied the computer will cut throttle and thus give it that "stalling" feeling.
I can only assume that in the past either the backwards pulling force from a dead stop into a right turn tripped the brake or my foot would slightly touch it. This makes sense with a few other scenarios too like when i was climbing up a hill.

Now that I know what causes it Im constantly monitoring my foot. If none of you have tried it, try pressing on the brake just enough to get the lights to turn on while your driving and tell me if it stalls on you. What a trip! Guess I need to get that pedal adjusted.

Thank you all for the input, Im rather glad I cleaned up my throttle body regardless, I will try to get this information out to any others having this problem.
