Front Wheel Bearing replacement, 2nd gen 4x4

I've searched and read through a bunch of threads, unfortunately I'm unable to make a clear determination. If you wanted to replace the front wheel bearings on a 4x4, do they have to be pressed in with a press?? Or is it a simple swap out the old with the new when you have it all apart? Or does it depend if you get Toyota replacement parts as compared to aftermarket?
I'm approaching 200,000 on the originals, as far as I can tell I'm getting no weird noises from the front end, just thinking they won't last forever.

yea, when you avg 30000 to 40000/year, it adds up quick.

 

The bearing has to be pressed in, no one sells them as an assembly. Congratulations on making it this far without having to replace them.

This looks like a complete assembly per wheel to me. What am I missing?

Plus, for sh*ts and giggles I asked to see what they had at my local AutoZone. He brought out the box, showed what looks like in the attached link. When I did some searching on Rockauto.com, looks like some are complete units? and some are just the bearing that would be pressed into the existing casting.

 

It's a unitized bearing assembly but it lacks the hub. You need to press the old bearings off the hub and then probably cut the outer bearing inner race off the hub. Then press the new bearings onto the hub.

 

i found them on ebay already put together.. well for my 4runner anyways...not quite oem but it'll work.. unbolt the old, beat it out of there, put on the new. remember when installing it back 3/4 turn on each bolt clockwise, make sure it bolts up evenly. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120823212073&_trksid=p2992.m753

You could buy the bearing and a new bearing press for that price...

 

if u do it yourself.. or think about labor charges just for them doing it.

 

So I'm going to have to replace my front bearing this up coming weekend (FML), can I just get the bearings without getting the whole hub assembly? I know I'm going to have to get the old one pressed out but I don't really see the need to buy a whole new damn assembly...

think about the savings of doing it all yourself with a little help from NAPA.

Napa press on/off = $20 per side ($40 total)
2 New bearings = $120

Saving you $340 for other fun and all I had to do was drive 15 minutes and they had them done in an hour.

 

But just to make sure I just need the bearing, inner seal and outter seal correct? On one post I read they were talking about an OE O-ring, but I didn't know if that was for replacing the tie rod or ball joint...

 

Theres an o-ring too but mine looked good, I just cleaned em off and put em back on.

 

Reusing an o-ring is like reusing a condom. Sure, you could, but what's the price of it failing. O-rings are cheap.

 

In my opinion too expansive. I just did mine a few months back, just buy the bearing online for about 30-40 a piece, repack them with good grease, put the oil seals on the new bearing, remove the old hub/bearing from truck and take them to a good Automotive machine shop and they will remove the old bearing from the hub ($30 a piece) and press/install your new bearings. Install the complete hub/bearing set back on truck.............job done-cheap. Good luck man.

 

Just did two em last Saturday. Wasn't that bad, ran into a couple snags, but it was easy, and straight forward. There was a press local, so it only cost money to get the bearings.

 

Whats going to fail? Have you even had one of these apart?

There are certain applications where re-using things isn't a problem, this is one of those. Nothing moves against the o-ring it just sits between two pieces.

Also in this case try ordering those cheap o-rings and see how much two of em cost ya shipped.

 

I need to respectfully agree to disagree. IMO any part that can fail and cause a ton of damage to other non-related parts while leaving you stranded is worth the $7 per gasket.


Mine were toasted...all of them of course so was most of my IFS. That spring was the "O" ring. It failed thus causing bearing failure IMO.
