Ok so i got a new clutch put in my truck under warranty 20k miles ago, and not too long after that i noticed a chirping sound coming from under my truck. it would go away by slightly pressing in on the clutch. i didnt think too much of it at the time, but it has progressively gotten worse over the last year. i researched it and determined its certainly the throw out bearing. i had my buddy drive my truck home after i had a few beers this weekend and hes not the best manual driver. the next time i got in it after he drove it i put the truck in first gear and it begins to struggle to move and has a serious hopping action.it shifts smoothly afterwards and if the truck is moving the slightest bit it seems normal. now i know with the angle of my drive shaft after lifting it, the truck shudders a bit, but the truck sounds as if it is stalling out and seems to hop. i took it to the local shop, explained the situation, and he said he thinks its a bad clutch. any thoughts?

the 6 speed is notorious for being a shitty transmission. My throw out bearing started chirping at 40k miles. I traded it in for an auto

The noise you are hearing certainly sounds like the throw-out bearing chirp. Do you know if the update was done according to the TSB at that time? Are you still under warranty? If no update and out of warranty then look at the URD sleeve and bearing kit.

Axle wrap plays a huge part in what you describe with the shuddering, but if it only really started after he drove it I'm thinking he overheated the clutch and hotspotted the pressure plate and flywheel. I would correct the driveline angles first though if you know they are off.

sounds like you have clutch chatter and bad throw out bearing

clutch chatter can come from heat spots on your pressure plate or flywheel from slipping or riding the clutch, or just abusing it.

Id probably slap your friend silly, but why would you let him drive your truck after he had been drinking ?

No i am not sure if it was done according to the TSB, I looked into the URD sleeve but the mechanic was asking me if it was the bearing or the sleeve that i had found out made the chirping sound. i was not sure which it was. he mentioned something about pressure plates and flywheels, but he was adamant about getting my clutch replaced.

as far as warranty is concerned, i no longer have that.

Im not denying the fact that my truck has axle wrap, but this is a whole new feeling from the usual take-off shudder.

What would you suggest i do? I know the rule of thumb is to start cheap, but i dont want to have my on his lift for multiple days and rack up a huge bill.

I had bee drinking not my friend.

    my bad i misread it.

i dont think there is much you can do other than replacing the clutch. which i know no one wants to do. i would try to solve your axle wrap problem and see if it helps at all.

my 05 has 100k on it with the stock clutch and the TO squeels. It still feels/grabs fine, but I am planning on doing the clutch and TO bearing kit from URD soon just to do it and solve these problems for good.

The reason for the sleeve is that the bearing guide is cast aluminum and integral with the belhousing. As it wears, the TO bearing is no longer centered to the clutch, and the off-center causes the diaphragm fingers to rub on it and making the chirping noise. The sleeve kit re-centers the bearing, and being made of stainless steel is much more resistant to wear than the original cast aluminum snout.

IMO. I don't agree with your "notorious" comment on this transmission. Just because you had a bad experience doesn't mean they are all bad or have a notorious rep of being bad. I think it's a good truck transmission but I have been driving trucks with manual transmissions my whole life. This one is pretty smooth. Maybe you got a bad one? That happens in mass production products. Maybe your driving habits contributed to a premature mechanical? Who knows? But this is not a "shitty" transmission.

You read my mind, i was going to ask more details about the difference because URD only explains that it is stainless. I am going to order the TO bearing today and have the mechanic install it. I suppose i will let him determine whether or not i need a new flywheel, pressure plate, and/or clutch.

It was a design flaw that Toyota corrected with a re-engineered TOB. The sleeve kit does the same thing for those out of warranty. The sleeve covers the damaged shaft without getting a new trans and housing since the shaft is non-removable. Hopefully you will get it resolved soon.

I'm not sure if it's in production, but the remedy for the TSB has the new parts. One would hope, but no one can confirm until a truck after the tsb started was built and has had the issue. It can take 30-40k miles to show up. I think the TSB came out in mid 2011.

I will have to find the TSB and read it. I don't have any issues with mine, in fact it's been great, but I'm at about 20,000 miles now. So like most things, time will tell. Thanks.

do a quick search on this forum about the 6 speed, tons of issues. Most of them don't shift smoothly and there is the whole TOB issue . Maybe you got a good one:)
