Is Sound Deadener Worth The Money?

Right now I have an 06 double cab that I put 4 boston acoustic door speakers and a 12 inch rockford fosgate shallow mount sub in and now I am considering putting in sound deadener in the doors and the back cab wall. I want to know if this will make a noticeable difference in the sound quality of speakers and sub and also if this will keep a lot of road noise out. If I do this I will probably go with Dynamat or Raamat, but if you do Raamat do you have to put in ensolite first. Does anybody that may have done this have a ball park estimate of how much of this stuff I would have to order and about how much this will cost Thanks for any help and sorry for all the questions.

 

don't know how much it cost, nor how much you need. however, ive read nothing but VERY positive reviews from those on here that have done it.

I bought 100sq ft, which was complete overkill. I used less than 50sq ft. cost me for the 100sq 127 but i didnt us either you said. I used fatmat

I've used fatmat in my other cars. Cheaper than dynamat and works really well

 

Make sure you understand what you are trying to do, sound deadening or vibration damping, as they are different animals and require different products.

 

I bought $40 worth of dynamat and reinforced the doorskins. Made a ton of difference in vibration/rattling and lets me turn up my 6x9 Alpines without buzzing or rattling. I would expect the door treatment to do very little for road noise though. Most of the noise I get is wind noise up around the windows/mirrors/windshield, and most of the rest comes through the floor, which you can line if you're serious about it. I wouldn't spend the $$ to line the entire door and cab wall unless I was going all out and doing the floor too.

 

I've done the roof in 2 layers, the back wall, and the door skins and inner structure. It made a Ton of difference I road and wind noise. I've got a paintable deadener for the floor, but haven't done it yet. It's killed the vibration/rattle, and tightened up the bass. I used 100 sq.ft, most would say what I did is overkill, but I'm happy with the results.

Are you happy with the rockford sub? Do you have pics of it behind your seat? I am wanting to build my own box for one.

 

Sound deadening makes a huge difference. IMHO new speakers should not even be considered until the the area where the speaker will be going into is properly dampened with CLD tiles. http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi is where I ordered everything for my truck, but i did the full CCF/MLV treatment well. Don is a class act and is extremely helpful with any questions you might have. Most people make the mistake of buying too much CLD. It's a waste of money and time. Agree with nicostatus... sounddeadener showdown will be where i go unless i can find local ssource for mlv. Or anything thats 1lb/sqft.

Isolate the backwave of the speaker and block sound with weight and you should be happy camper.

so if you have an old vehicle and you want to isolate and stop vibrations and sound deaden i'm to believe it that i will need to use two different products?

so fatmat or dynamat then some other product. how would you go about isolating vibrations and what products are the best at both?

 

Stopping panel vibrations and stopping road noise from coming into the cabin of the truck are two different things, but people often times confuse the two as being the same thing. Here is a direct quote from the sounddeadenershowdown website: "The first thing you will notice is that the noise from the truck is making the door's sheet metal vibrate - essentially turning it into an unwanted speaker that is right next to you. Apply a vibration damper like CLD Tiles to stop the vibration. CLD Tiles have been designed to work with minimal panel coverage. That means you will need to do less work and the project will cost you less."
CLD tiles (this does the same thing as the brand name "Dynamat" mind you) will stop the panel vibrations caused by the bass and midbass tones of your speakers. People often times cover the entire area of their vehicle with this in hopes of stopping sound from coming in as well. This is totally ineffective (it helps, but to a very small degree) because CLD tile was not made for this purpose (to block sound). If you want to block out sound you need to utilize a combination of CCF (closed cell foam) and MLV (mass loaded vinyl) ON TOP of the CLD tiles. So in essence you would need to use three different things (is your wallet hurting yet?) This is a short explanation, but hope this helps. In my double cab I did the full treatment and let me tell you especially road noise wise, it helps tremendously. Ripping out the interior and putting it back in is a daunting task to do by yourself, so decide if the noise isolation will be worth it to you. I can tell you when my parents borrowed my truck to haul some miscellaneous things after I did all of this, as soon as I saw them again, they both commented about how quiet my truck had become and they did not know I had taken everything out and did the whole CLD/CCF/MLV treatment less than 24 hours before. Like I said, hope this helps!

I called up Rick at Raamat, awesome guy to talk to and very knowledgeable. He set me up with exactly what I needed to do all 4 doors and rear wall with deadener and ensolite.

Just the difference in noise when you close the door, before and after, is impressive. I was a skeptic before I did it, but I would absolutely do it again.

 

sub'd. I went to a local car audio place and they quoted me 650 bucks to do all four doors, back panel and pillars with dynomat. I thought that was a bit much! I think I could do it myself anyways. So....could I use fatmat and the cld tiles and be fine? I just want to stop the rattling of my sub-woofers. It's very noticeable on the inside and outside of the pickup....and it's annoying.

Also, just CLD tiles should be fine. FWIW i did not put any CLD on my roof and pillars and I have no rattles. Also did not put much on the floor because there is a lot of solid factory deadener on there and it would be pointless to layer CLD on top of that. Just use your ears and knock on the metal with your hand, it should sound dull when properly dampened.
