Oil filter help??

I just picked up an oil filter for my 2012 dcsb. It looks like the same size that goes on my 2007 tacoma 4cy. It's a fram tg 3614. Is this the right size for the 4.0?? I went by the computer at wal mart. The stock oil filter looks a little taller to me. Thanks for any help

Fram..? Size dont matter, its just the filtering capabilities of the filter..taller filter will filter more then a shorter filter.

 

Yes that filter will work. A lot of the replacement ones aren't as tall as the stock one...

Is fram bad or something?? Was gonna get the purolator or bosch all I could find at wally world. I used fram on my 07 tacoma and never had any problems. All of the the other ones was short also. I have lifetime free oil changes but its only every 10,000 miles and I'm at 5,000 now and I at least wanted to get that oil out from breaking in the motor. Also isn't the oil filter on top? I told my old man it was and he said it surely wasn't, but he is very old school.

 

Yes, the 3614 will fit. I find the OE toyota filter to be cheaper and is rated much better though. I buy a few at a time to make up for the inconvenience of vsiting the dealer during business hours.

The TG "tough guard" filters do at least have an anti-drainback valve, something the cheaper PH "extra guard" do not have. Very important for a top mounted filter like our V6's.

Fram makes some of the cheapest filters on the market. I wouldn't put a Fram filter on my truck. For the price, the OEM one is a much better product.

 

A very short search will reveal what pieces of shit they are.
Cardboard endcaps, leaking bypass valve... Ya... they're junk.
And Pennzoil is owned by Allied Signal... also owns Jiffy Lube.
Jiffy Lube filters are Fram with a different colored paint.
So are Microguard.

They are now the same filter. Bosch is more expensive, but it is the same as a basic Purolator Classic.
Personally, I buy the Purolator Pure-One. I like the textured paint... makes is a lot easier to install and remove.

Stay away from the above mentioned Fram products.
Also the Champion Labs products sold under Supertech, AC-Delco, STP, and perhaps a few others. They are no better than Fram. Fiber endplates and a plastic cage center support tube that has been reported to collapse.

2.7 is on the passenger side of the block above the crossmember.

 

True true... and in some cases, the media itself does not fill the can.
Quite a few Amsoil (Wix) filters have been opened to reveal that the media was actually only half the height of the can.
This allows one filter element to be used in quite a number of different applications.

 

Alrighty well now i know LOL . Where do you get the factory oil filters? at the dealership? I didn't know if they would let you walk in and buy one. And where do you get some of these better filters at we only have a napa in my town and I don't even know what they carry. And I got the tough guard filter I figured it might be better it cost for than the the regular one.

 

We sell them all the time over the counter. Don't know why you think they wouldn't sell you one or a case

 

The only difference between the Tough Guard and the cheaper one is the black texture paint. Seriously. It's the same filter.


Honestly, the Toyota filter is an excellent filter and you really can't do better. Certainly not for the price.
You can get them at your dealer, but check some of the online dealerships like Titus-Will and Toyota of Dallas. They are generally around $4.00 per filter (shipping is minimum $10 or 10% of the order) so ordering a case through them is cheaper if your dealer is charging more than $4.50 per filter.

$15.95 for your air filter and $3.89 for oil.

 

I just go to the local Stealership. They're generally around the same price as you spent on your Fram filter and they'll give you the compression washer for the oil drain plug.

 

Alright thanks for the help guys. I'll get some OEM filters for it for when i change it again, cause I don't like the idea of 10,000 mile oil change so i figure they'll change it at 1ok and i'll change it at 15k and so on that way every other oil change is free. Atleast it'll save some money.

 

The thing that bugs me the most about 10k service intervals is if you are not in the habit of checking your oil, you may end up running low.

Most manufacturers consider 1 quart every 3k to be "acceptable" to the point that they won't do anything under warranty to fix it, even though in my mind, 1 quart in 10,000 on an engine with 100k on it is not acceptable for a Toyota...

Of course, if you bring your Taco in at 10k and it's 3 quarts low, then the dealer is going to claim that you didn't maintain the proper oil levels (which is true) and that's what caused the problem (which is unlikely).

5k intervals? Ya... you're not going to kill a Taco running 1-1.5qts low.

But checking one's oil seems to have become a lost art that died with the full service gas station.

 

i changed my oil & filter today, went w/ the toyota filter, based on the discussion in chris4x4's thread on the subject in the Technical Chat area..

the factory installed filter is a PITA to get off...

 

Napa gold 1348 or 1516, they specify 1348 but 1516 filters better and is larger. Wix/Napa Gold are generally accepted as quality filters. Pretty much what I use every time..

 

i find the dipstick difficult to read... there's no "checkering" pattern on the end of the dipstick to accumulate oil for a good read, ..instead, no matter how many times i wipe and and re-check, the dipstick must be picking up oil as it travels in the dipstick tube, because it is runny and inconsistent on the dipstick,. ..IDK, maybe i'm not looking at it right?..
