    Hi Folks,

I'm a new Tac '12 owner and first Toyota. So far, love the truck. Curious to what you all storage in the in-bed storage w/o a topper? While I like the idea of the additional storage, it seems its rather useless for a few reasons. First, very limited ports for things, a few open nooks that would be prone to theft. Second, the enclosed areas are not lockable. Seems rather useless to keep anything of value.

My experience with storage in trucks has been that the most secure option is a Weatherguard box, extremely secure compared to the others but expensive.

    http://www.weatherguard.com/truck_tool_boxes/view_products.php?subcat_id=21

I just bought a 2012 Tacoma (love it) and opted for a tri fold hard cover, with OEM box divider and tailgate lock. Less secure but easy to access, keeps things clean & seperated inside box and looks good. i have pictures in my profile if you're interested.

As a rule, i just don't carry anything worth enough to warrant the expense and incovenience of a tool box like a Weatherguard. But if you need to carry alot of expensive goodies then I'd strongly recommend it.

I went around & around with the same question. I considered some cheaper options, but, eventually0d1f8bf9_2d626c7a44d23c3083e1c4978c69a83b9851545f.jpg went with this. Good luck.

The video above is legit. I have seen them demonstrate it at the industry trade shows. Cheap Weatherguard boxes start easily over $500, standard size over $600 and even more for the odd-balls .. ie Tacoma size.

Just wondering where one would find those steel locking inserts for the storage?

Plus, although it is hard to tell from the pics alone, the lock looks flimsy at best. Plenty of times in the past I've picked locks like that with a paperclip and small flathead screwdriver.

Sure, it's a good general theft deterrent, but I doubt would stop anyone that really wanted to get at the contents of the box.

I hate the tool box look so I threw a few locks on the plastic bins and then added a few locking ammo can to the bed rail. I can remove them in like 5 min if I don't need them.

Really like that ammo can -- great idea using the rails. I may have to give something like that a shot.

I keep 4 ratchet straps and my hitch ball in the storage containers. I wouldn't put anything more expensive than that in them.

I did the storage container lock mod, the ammo can mod (using MTM plastic ammo cans, since my metal ammo cans were always rusting and too heavy IMO) and I have a 48 gallon Rubbermaid Action Packer in the bed too. Best storage mod I did so far was the Action Packer. I keep tons of stuff in there, and it comes out easily and goes in the back seat or garage when I need the bed space.

I assume your talking about the bet storage cover locks. They are just lock from homedept make sure you pay attention to the number on the lock so you can get matching locks so you don't need a bunch of keys.

Yeah, it is. I had to have this mod, especially since my whole theme is firearms/tactical. This was one of the first mods I did to my 2009 Prerunner Sport and the first thing I transferred over onto my 2012 4x4 Sport

Tie down straps, if they want them they can have them just leave the damn cover.
