You do not want the stock neoprene... cheap material does not hold up.

If you don't have a hardware store that carries the 1/8th gasket material, let me know and I'll pick some up for you at the local store here.

    It's $2.49 for a 6 x 6 x 1/8" sheet which is enough for two full sets of tabs.

gradually replacing the bumper with hairy bondo ;-)
Swore a lot. Plotted a vague vile end for some penny pinchers and engineers at Toyota. Swore some more. Got the dremel with the cutoff disk out. Got the 4-1/2 inch grinder out. Got covered with rust & smutz. Discovered that my spare tire is not actually rusted in place.

With any luck, once I go pick up a probably overpriced but possibly worth it Toyota exhaust gasket, I'll have both front Air/Fuel (really an oxygen sensor variant, but even the box calls it that rather than oxygen) and rear oxygen sensors replaced, kiss my P1135 (A/F preheater fail) bye bye, see a closed loop on my ultragauge, and we'll see if 650F paint holds up on the new cat-back (at least what didn't get scraped off wiggling the darn thing into place.) The new hardware is all stainless (except the lockwashers) and is slathered in antiseize.

I've been drenching all the old hardware in Kroil for a week or so.

I remembered halfway through (and long after ordering the new pair once I knew the front had failed) that my mechanic had replaced the rear O2 not so long ago (~ 2 years or less - anyone near NW Mass need a slightly used, not throwing an error code Denso rear O2 sensor, cheapish?) but even on that one the nuts would not move, nor work with a socket - done by mechanic, and he was too cheap to use antiseize and stainless nuts, I guess. The rear nuts were vaguely but not usefully nutshaped, the front ones (Toyota originals, they were also too cheap for stainless or antiseize) not even remotely - sort of a cone was left when the rust cracked off. Access to the front is good by "must take the fenders off to change the spark plugs" standards, poor otherwise - tubes off the auto tranny are right in the way of that front sensor with a wrench. No way to use a ratchet on the nut-cores, so after cutting the nut-remains as much as possible with the dremel, it was get a bite with the vise-grips, move it 1/10 of a turn or less, swear and repeat. The outside stud/nut was easier (but not easy) to access through the wheel well. Even knowing that I had to pry the tab up the electrical connector by itself was a half-hour fight, since there was no way to pry up the tab and pull at the same time while wedged up in there. Eventually I got the connector off the bracket by squeezing the plastic bottom tab, since I figured trying to get the bracket off the tranny was going to be another losing battle (steel bolt into aluminum - wanna bet there's no antiseize on that, too?)

The rear sensor connector goes in under the passenger seat - after seeing that there was no intelligent way to get at it (ie, you are evidently expected to take the seat out and pull up the doorsill to get the carpet up to get at it, rather than there being a flap cut under the seat) I pulled the grommet and found that the previous job had simply snapped the mount so that the connector could be pulled down through the grommet hole - much easier.

Kroil's lack of magical effect (well, perhaps it helped a little with allowing the nut cores to move eventually without breaking a stud off) extended to the exhaust flange bolts, but I kinda expected that and pulled out the more serious grinder to remove those nuts completely, then hammered the bolts back out and finally got the exhaust disconnected.

Wiggled the rubber mounts off ( I think those were new with the frame, so I didn't get new ones) and discovered that I needed to get the spare out of the way to get the exhaust out/in. While I know it would tick of my driver ed guy, I'd never actually moved the spare before (I haven't actually had a flat since 1994, as best I recall), and was dubious as to whether it would, but after some initial resistance that made me worry one more thing was going to break from rust, it unwound nicely.

Rockauto Denso sensors do come with gaskets, but you need 8x1.25mm stainless (unless you are silly) nuts and lockwashers unless you already have stainless hardware on there, IME.

I was thinking I might try reusing the exhaust gasket from what I could see at the edge, but suspect it's hopeless looking at it once it was out, and it was past closing time at the parts stores by then. I seem to recall that the Toyota exhaust donut gasket is "better" than aftermarket, so I'll try one if it's not too absurd.

Somewhat of a long and frustrating day, but progress eventually made, and should be done tomorrow, I hope.
