Does anyone know if removing the secondary air filter improves gas mileage or performance?

Welcome to the site! Some people say yes some say no. Gadget @ URD has dyno'd our trucks and he has found zero difference.

I think the only ones noticing anything would be on the 4s....a nano difference if any on my 2.7...........nope wasn't dyno'd probably just placebo effect but there is less stuff in the way of air entering the engine so I'm just honoring the concept.

It seemed to make a diff in my 2.7 but I took it out with only 1000 miles so it could have been break in. Then at 14000 miles I put it back in and it was week and ran kinna crappy I'm glad I took mine out.:D

If it does not seem to make a difference on the V6, why does it seem so many people are removing it?

I just took mine out it was pretty easy all you have to do is remove the air box by taking out 2 screws remove all the little clips and hoses take the air box out, set it on a bench and have at those little plastic clips nothing to it about 15 min and your done By the way i didnt really notice an increase in power but it sounds cooler now lol.

    Exactly.

I think alot of people want to "Belive" they are improveing their engine performance. I showed 06Bluez, and Brianr yesterday how well the stock intake actually flows when compared with an "Cold Air Intake" (AFE). The charcoal filter is there to capture any "Fumes" that may be left in the intake uppon shut down. If it was a restrictive item in the intake, it would, indeed, cause the engine to burn more fuel during the running of the engine, thus leading to a higher emissions out put. Given the size of the filter vs. the amount of air the TB can flow, it has no affect on the engine. I removed mine to run some tests, and I regret it, as It cant be reinstalled if removed. Well, it CAN, but I have since destroyed the filter. I tested the filter on a device with a larger flow than the OEM throttle body, and the only time I started to see a restriction, was when it was flowing about 2.8 times the flow of what the throttle body is capable of accepting. In other words, the only way the engine would even begine to "feel" this filter is if it was force inducted.

You might notice a very TINY itty bitty increase in throttle response, especially if you STOMP on the gas....but normal driving...nothing really.

^I noticed it jumps off the line more (throttle response) but that's it.

There is absolutely no harm in removing it, though. Consider that all the aftermarket CAI's remove it.
