Whats the heaviest your taco has towed???

must pick up trucks have a tow/hawl button, but the tacoma does not, how do you guys pull stuff? I mean with the automatic transmission, In D or in 4?

 

On flat terrain I leave it in D. If I know I'm going over hills where it will want to constantly shift I will put it in 4.

 

No, I do not have the tow package. Just a hitch from Uhaul.

 

You have a goose neck in the truck?

 

Did you do the work yourself? If so, was it difficult to do? I'm not sure if I should attempt this or have it done professionally. Or if I should even have it done at all. I think the heaviest I'll ever tow is around 3000 Lbs.

Yes. The Hitch and the Timbrens were easy just follow the instructions. The oil and transmission cooler were a little more complex. Had to modify the half cup that surrounds the oil filter to route the oil lines the most direct route and since I don't like the retainer straps that come with the coolers I fabricated brackets to mount them just behind the grill. Running the lines back and forth to the coolers was a little tricky to keep them off the sharp edges and various sensors. Where needed I made some brackets and other places I used short pieces of slighly larger hose wrapped around the actual lines to protect from sharp edges. Wiring was the only part I consider hard but most anybody could do it with a little study and taking it slow. If I never intended to pull more than 3500 pounds I would not bother with the oil cooler but you still need the hitch, transmission cooler (IMO) and the wiring.

The transmission cooler adds another problem and that is the amount of transmission fluid you need to add to the system to make up for the little bit lost when you break the system open and the volume of the cooler and line themselves. Toyota's sealed system with no dipstick makes this more difficult. I made my best guess and added 3 cups of fluid at the transmission and so far so good. I still plan on checking the level properly using the procedure I found here. Just as a side note there's a thread on here that talks about checking the transmission level and one of the reoccurring questions if whether or not the 2 wheel drive prerunners have the transmission oil temp light on the dash. My 08 does have the light and it will light when you follow the posted procedure.

 

Sorry not to get back to you for a couple of days. Your right its 23' plus a little. It has a rear slide that only extends while parked. The dry weight is 4300. I need to check the loaded weight but I think I am around 5000 to 5300 fully loaded and headed out. I do have weight distribution and sway control. I have the Equalizer Hitch and it works like a champ, only down side is it is very heavy.

 

I recall some recommended advice from a boat dealer one time that said you should never pull more than 85% of the rated capacity of the vehicle. If that is true then a V6 with towing package should never pull more than 5,525 lbs safely. Has anyone else heard of this rule before?

 

It just his opinion. The engineers already tested and know better than all of the so call experts. Cars, trucks in Asia has way higher ratings...

Numbers in the US are understated.

 

Do you have the V6? I have no experience with the I4 but with my experience with the V6 I think it is quite safe and your truck will pull that "A liner" all day with no problem. By going with a pop up most of the body of the trailer will be behind your truck which will cut way down on the drag and the truck can easily handle the weight of the trailer. Like I said in the previous post all you need is the frame mounted hitch, transmission cooler and wiring.

Ive never seen a yota pull a gooseneck before... Seen a ranger do that but not a taco... Didnt know you could do that haha looks impressive

 

I haul frieght,furniture, vehicles pallets of stone etc. With my 2012 tacoma. Today i loaded 6500lbs on my 3300lb gooseneck trailer i designed and built for my taco.

Thats nearly 10k total weight. No problem. No one mfg a gooseneck hitch for a tacoma so i designed and built one. I believe i can safely pull 12k with this setup, maybe more. I haul cars weighing 4 to 6k for the local toyota dealer when they need a single car picked up or delivered. I also installed rear suspension air bags to handle the heavier loads.

In the near future i plan to offer a tow package for tacoma owners wishing to get the most out of their truck. I will also offer custom gooseneck trailers as well. I built my trailer specific for my taco. Its a deck over, 18ft with 3 foot dovetail for 21 ft total with ramps. The gooseneck is alittle shorter and lower than standard and the deck is only 30.5 inches in height. Im still trying figure out how to post pics. When i do ill post pics.

 

Towed a roll back up a hill (4 wheel drive of course) very happy she did it!! i should have took a video it would have been epic for all the Tacoma's...and this is a 4cyl.

Here's the pictures I have with a trailer.
I've only pulled with a load twice, once was 600 miles when we picked up the white trailer with about 3k pounds of extra weight on it. It pulled fine through the hills. The second time was the red trailer and that was about 10 miles with a tractor on it, the brakes grabbed on that trailer so is was a pain. The white trailer is currently being repainted and getting a new deck as everything is still original from 1974 when it was built, then will be the true test as I'm supposed to go pick up a JD 4020 tractor and pull it 600 miles to my dads place.
