Ordered this and hoping it works for a different purpose.

Pretty much, but I'm doing it a certain way to look even.

EDIT: Even as in the lighting. And at least hoping to get it to look even.

I have it all hooked up now. I have it hooked up with the tail light fuse so it will be same as parking lights (10 amps), BUT no light. What's going on with this? I have positive going to the fuse and negative going to ground. HELP

 

Bad ground?

 

I wondered that. I can check. Does it sound like I have it wired right though? Will 10 amps be fine for it?

 

It isn't ground. I checked it and even tried it somewhere else.

 

Could be a defective light. Try it on a 9v battery to make sure it works.

 

Tested it before and worked.

 

Are you using an add a fuse or just tapping the wire straight in the slot? Make sure there is actually power flowing from the slot you are using.

 

I tapped it into the slot. It's the 10 amp fuse that says tail. I'm guessing tail lights?

 

Yep that should work. Try a fuse tap

 

I tapped it into that one and it doesn't work. Is there a certain way it goes in or a certain part of the slot?

 

Would size of wire matter?

 

try it directly from the battery to see if it works...if it does than check the fuse your tapping into, maybe there's no power there. Grab a multi-meter and check for suitable power sources...idk what else to suggest.

if it doesn't work when connected to the battery, then I'd say check your grounds again.

Also check for continuity from the positive wire to ground, obviously not connected to power. In other works connect your wire to a good ground, then check to see if you've got a good circuit from your positive wire to the truck

 

wire size only really matters when your dealing with high current! seeing as it's only an led panel, that wouldn't draw much in current.

 

I got it working! Turns out the wire colors on the light panel were backwards.. I was mad, but now it's working fine. Here is the write up!

If you already have a wire ran to the fuse box, why not just connect it to the parking light fuse since that is indeed the circuit you wanted in the first place. The problem is only one of four possible things:

1- bad ground. make sure it is connected to something that is linked to the frame. Just because its metal does not mean its ground! Just 2 days ago i installed something in my driver door... found out the entire driver door reads ground when tested, but even when I shaved off the paint, it was not a good enough ground to power what I installed. Try replacing ground in different location.

2- bad power supply. Since you just shoved the wire into the slot without and add a circuit (NOT RECOMMENDED), its possible its not getting a good connection. That or the fuse you tapped is not powered when parking lights are on ("tail" might mean brake lights not parking lights)

3-bad wiring or loose connection. Maybe a ripped or pinched wire. Double check your wires and test at various points to see where the problem is.

4- defective light. Re-test light on battery or a 9v battery. If it works, refer to problems 1-3

* note that it is extremely important that you put a fuse on your positive wire. You only need a 2.5amp fuse for that tiny led pack, even 5amp is fine. The circuit you tap into can be any amperage it does not matter. Also, wire size does not matter for this application. As long as the wire used was equal to or larger than the wire that was already pre-soldered onto the board then your good. Leds draw such a small current you don't need a large wire. A relay is not required, however, a fuse is a must!

Another thing to keep in mind, this light is located inside the engine compartment, and even worse, behind the grille where it is exposed to the elements (weather) make sure your light is weatherproof. If it is not, get one that is or else your going to pop your fuse and possibly damage the circuit as soon as you wash the truck or it rains. Also, those wired are so small they will melt easily. Be sure to protect any wires in the engine compartment with split loom and make sure to shrink tube your connections. Hope this helps
